Hdtv

Aight guys, how's this work. I can get a Samsung 27 inch slim fit flat screen with HDTV tuner built in for a good price. 400 to be exact.
How does the HDTV work? I've heard there is over the air, cable, and satellite.
Satellite is a no go.
For over the air, is that like for instance Monday night football is in HDTV. If I would watch MNF, does it automatically show up in HDTV since the TV has the tuner?
This would only be for the "network" channels I'm assuming.
Then they're is standard cable and digital cable. Digital cable here is 45 bux a month, i really dont want that.
Can I still get HDTV with standard cable or does it need to be digital cable???
Help me guys!

Head over to avsforum.com Great site with more HDTV geeks than you can shake a stick at.

I've got a projector and a 96" Carada Wallmount screen, using an antenna in my attic for pulling in all the OTA (Over the Air) signals from Nashville. HDTV is the sh!T.. I'm here to tell ya.

BTW.. ESPN is carrying MNF starting next year so you won't get it OTA.. however NBC will be carrying SNF (Sunday Night Football w/Madden and Michaels) which will be in HD! w00T!

:punk:

So the only "OTA" HDTV is like networks? such as NBC, ABC, CBS, etc....??

For something like ESPN, to get HDTV do i need digital cable or would standard cable work?

PureStang 02-26-2006 04:02 PM

ull need digital cable if i wanna see cable channels in HD.....i have basic cable (like 70 or so chanels) and non of them are in HD...in my opinion tho....HD televisions are too far ahead of the game....we cant truley see high def.....

You need to check with your cable co., but you would most likely have to subscribe to the HDTV pack at a minimum. Your built-in tuner may or may not work for your Cable. You typically get a HD cable box when you subscribe if you need it. A buddy just bought a high end Pioneer HD Plasma, and it receives HD from Comcast just fine w/o an additional cable box. YMMV of this.

Also, Digital is on/off. So if you pull OTA signals, it's just as good as cable... but you are correct in that OTA is networks only. For Discovery HD, HD Net, TNT-HD, HBO-HD, ESPN-HD, etc.. you will need cable or sattelite.

Once you start watching HD, you wont want to watch SD ever again. It spoils you. :wallbash:

More than likely I'm just gonna get a regular flat screen TV then. I was just checking because of the good deal I could get on a HDTV. I dont want to have to pay a lot more just to be able to get the full effects out of it.

Sure you can, you just need a big enough screen.

Last year when i was shopping for my plasma i was trying to decide between 2 panny models. One was EDTV and one was HDTV, both 42inches.

I decided on the ED. My buddy was with me and started bitching about it, i pointed at the TV's, they were side by side, we were 10 feet away.
I asked him Which is HD and which is ED? (they had an HD signal on both).
He sat there and looked at them for a few minuits, then pointed to the one one the left, said THAT ONE! That is the HD one!

He actually picked the EDTV as being the HDTV. He couldnt tell a difference any more than i could. And this wasnt no **** in best buy, i was at a high end customer electronics shop where they sell the likes of Krell and Mark Levinson gear, top notch high price, and the TV's were both professionally calibrated in a non windowed room. So it was NOT the settings that made the HD look bad.

Anything under 42 inches, if you sit more than 8 feet away, you will NOT see a difference. In fact i could only tell the difference when i was about 3 feet away from the plasma's

I dont watch TV 3 feet away. I saved 800 bucks and walked out with a bitching plasma.

HD is better than ED, but if you cant tell the difference it doesent matter and you might as well save money.
Think of it like this. How far are you from your TV? For every 2 feet, add 10 inches to a screen. If you are 10 feet from your screen, 50inch EDTV is fine, anything bigger than 50 inches at that distance it would probably be best ot go with HD. anything smaller you wont be able to tell

Yes you can get over the air HDTV, however it MUST have a built in HD turner to do this. Not all Tv's have this feature. Its best to have a good aftermarket HD attenna too, however, bare wire CAN get the signal.

Cable works as well, if you have a digital cable box that will decode the HD signal. Not any Digital box will work.

I dont know anything about sattelite, i think it is ****.

No, Not really. You can select which you want. HD or SD.
On my Plasma with an HT over the air tuner i get SD Fox as channel 31, i get HD Fox as channel 31-1. I can watch either.

-----This would only be for the "network" channels I'm assuming.-------

Yes, Network are the only channels that broadcast over the air.

It MUST be digital Cable with an HD reciever which will be supplied by the cable company. Standard cable does not have the bandwidh capacity to broadcast high definition signals.

Dude, overall, yer lookin at 400 for a 27inch HDTV.
That is a good price. 5 years ago you could pay 400 for a good SD tv.

If you plan on keeping the TV, do NOT waste your time with an SD tv. Go with ED or HD. Only get an SD TV if it is going in a guest room, kitchen, garage, or some place like that.
SD Tv's should be regarded as disposable.

You might balk at 48 bucks a month now, a couple years from now you might find that MOST digital channels are being broadcast in HD. When that happens, yer gonna wish you grabbed the ED/HD version

Just curious why would u want such a small HDTV? is this for a small bedroom tv? or the family room type thing? My g/f has a huge 50 somethin inch tv with teh hd and she doesn't have cable, they get signal for Football games and other major events, other then that, idk unless you got an xbox 360 which just thinkin about the gamin on that with huge Tv makes me wana change my underware Lol...

whitethunder46 02-26-2006 07:29 PM

Well, I'll be viewing the TV no more than 15 feet away if this helps. Right now I'm leaning towards saving the money and just buying a normal flat SD 27 inch TV for 250.

The only way I'll do HD is IF they're a cheaper alternative to digital cable. Anyone knows what standard cable (the 70 channels) runs for? I'm guessing this varies from location, but digital cable is 45 bux around here a month.
