Catalytic Bank
 

Can anyone tell me more about a "Catalytic Bank," as in, what it does, what it's connected to, where it is on the car, and how much they run to repair?

I've never heard this term used but it could be the cats on one side of the exhaust versus the other.If it is,replacing them with stock Ford parts would be shockingly expensive.I had mine swiped after I had my headers installed.I called the Ford dealer to find out how much of a loss to put on the police report and.......$900.That is for the entire catted H-pipe so it looks like a good time to upgrade to some high flowing cats.One more thing,Bassani has been mentioned in some forums as not being the best about keeping their end of the warranty.

That makes some kind of sense. The previous owner (Who put 40,000 on the car in a matter of a year and a half) had a take-off GT Catback installed... the 2000 Mustang has a 80,000 or 8 year emissions warranty that covers such things as a "catalytic bank."

However since the previous owner swapped the exhaust (now its dual) I fear that the warranty is void and that I'd have to pay to get it replaced. What had happened was that the 2nd Catalytic bank on the driver's side exhaust pipe (2 to each pipe) wasn't doing too well, and one night I slipped up between neutral and reverse (causing an un-intentional neutral drop into reverse with a V6 mustang with traction control ON) and it in return bucked the engine maaaaaaaaaaad loose (my cold air disconnected from the engine, radiator fluid had seeped out of the hose, just a whole bad **** of problems). So I fixed the CAI and I took it home, and took it to garage the next day to check it out just in case something bucked loose... their diagnostic said that the engine was fine, intact bolted down, all hoses were connected and everything, but the 2nd Catayltic Bank had blown, and since I still had the other one there was no problem, but eventually that it would have to be replaced... he said that you'd notice a ****load of power-drop especially since you have a mustang if it had gotten worse.

So before I get the work done.. is the warranty void because the previous owner swapped the exhaust? And any more info on the actual part would be helpful.

There would be no warranty on the exhaust.If the engine moved as much as you say it could have loosened the connection between the exhaust pipes and is leaking.This could cause the code,maybe???

Ok your saying, you have a check engine light on? Reading codes p0420 or 430? just because it throws a catalyst efficiency code doesn't mean hey you have a bad cat. There are steps, it could be HO2S wires improperly connected. You sure these guys looked it over good? What you think us mechs just hook up a scanner and it tells you whats wrong and you just replace a part? No sir. Where did you go to get checked out? Make sure your not getting screwD

ehh... yeahhhh woo, let me clarify here.

The cat was GOING when I bought the car, and I failed Connecticut emmissions (I brought it from New York) twice because of a "catalytic bank 2 is below threshold"... this was confirmed at the emissions place. When I bucked the engine, I took it down to a shop and they said that it had blown, and said "that it was probablly something that was going downhill as it was, and when the engine bucked that just killed it."

The check engine light would come on, and go off... it was on before I bucked the engine, but was off when I restarted it after I reconnected the CAI.

I don't think I"m being screwed, its been the same story from two dealerships, two emissions stations and a trusted mechanic..
