Aluminum Flywheel
I am about to get a new dual friction clutch installed, is it worth changing out the original flywheel for an aluminum one? How much of a difference will it make?

I have the centerforce dual fricition clutch but chose to use my stock flywheel with it and no problems here..when I changed out my clutch The car still had VERY low miles though..so The flywheel was in good condition.. |
Not if you have a 4.6. The aluminum flywheel has much less mass/inertia and it's a shit ton easier to stall the car with them. Just stick with steel or nodular iron. You'd eventually get used to the aluminum but I don't think it's for you. If you were flossin' a drag race or road race only car it might be a different story but street car + 4.6 + aluminum = noh bwaynoh IMHO
I have one on my 5.4 and it's really too light. The extra tq from the 5.4 helps make up for it but I wouldn't want it with the 4.6 |
I have an aluminum flywheel from spec, there really is no difference from the stock piece other than you can feel it wind faster when you rev. I can say that it does feel like the car can stall easier but I have gotten used to that.

Anyone here with aluminum flywheels have clutch chatter problems when its in neutral at a stop?
That alone deters most people. But is well worth it in the end. I say go ahead and do the flywheel while your at it if you think you'd actually make use of it. Its a well worthwhile mod, but like r3d said really has to be used in order to get anything out of it. |

So the aluminum flywheel will make the car rev up faster? Why would I not want that? Thanks for the suggestions.

less inertia too, way easier to stall with low tq motors like the 4.6.

From my understanding it will be easier to spin the flywheel but more power is needed to keep it spinning? Makes no sense to me; seems like energy would balance out and you would get faster application of power.

If you think of the aluminum flywheel not having as much mass as a steel one, when the clutch engages their is less weight to keep the flywheel spinning which in turns makes it easier to stall.
The heavier the flywheel, the more mass there is keeping the flywheel spinning while engaging the clutch. |

Good decision, you really don't see or feel any performance gains at all so it's really not
worth it. My car had 90,xxx miles on it, the flywheel needed to be replaced. I found a good deal on eBay for the price of a steel piece so I went with it. Glad we could help. |
What about an aluminum one piece drive shaft? Should I remove the 2 piece, is it worth the $700.00?

Offhand I'm gunna say yes. With that blower on there, the 2 piece seems like broken waiting to happen.
What kind of HP are you putting down? How do you drive it? If the answers lean toward "a bunch" and "hard" then yes definitely. If you cruise it on the weekends and don't beat it... nah. |

The car is pushing 517 RWHP. I drive the car mostly on the weekends but I do run it often. The 2 piece drive shaft just seems like a bad idea to me. I wonder how Ford came up with this & why.

Because the car was not built to stand up to a supercharged engine injected with nitrous:D
