I've been told I have 2.73 rear gear. I was under the car to install a new fuel filter. Took some pics, don't know how to read the item on the rear ......

i cant read your numbers from your pics. the first set of numbers on bottom left is the gear ratio. and the two numbers right next to it is your rear end size(8.8 or 7.5) it should say 2 73 or it will say 3 27. looks like a 2.73 8.8 rear end to me. damn, gt's only had 2.73? i got a 7.5 rear end in my garage off a new edge v6 with 3.27 gears. wish i could find an extra set of hands i am dying to put it on.

Yo sand, bring the bitch out to my place if you want, ill help. As long as your not a creepy racist stalker. Or wierd. :D Back to OT, definatly an 8.8, however gear ratio im pretty sure you cant tell unless you take the gears out. Im not sure though. Either way, go for 3.73s man, or 4.10s if ya got an auto.

Pay no attention to the first line. On the second line, right where the bolt goes through, it will begin to read as follows: 2 L 73 88 Blah blah blah. This means its a 2.73:1 ring and pinion ratio on an 8.8" differential with limited slip. If it's a 3.27 it'll be 3 L 27 ... you get the picture.

A V6 rear end will go like this: 2 73 75 Blah blah blah. That means it's a 2.73, a 7.5" and did you notice the missing L? That's right, go get a cookie. It's an open differential. Or a one legged bitch, if you prefer.

Jack the car up, put it in neutral, and spin the rear wheel one rotation while counting how many times the driveshaft rotates. That's your gear ratio.

First post EVER. Great site you have.
Couple of things: 1. Good to understand how to check the gears when they are attached to the car but you don't have a tag but it doesn't help when it is just the third memger and you want to figure out what ring and pinion you have. Any sneaky way to test THAT?

I suspect that all of you are disdaining 2.73 ratios, looking for more wheel burning. I, on the other hand SEEK 2.73. Anyone have some hanging around that you'd like to sell? Alternatively, anyone know where I might find some. ebay was a strike out. Contact me directly, if you wish: JGug1@aol.com

Oh, Dumbo me.....I'm also looking for 4Bolt axles along with the disc brakes. My rear end is 5 bolt and I need 4 Bolt....Yeah, it isn't a traditional use of the third member. It's going on a Triumph TR7 with a V6, Eldelbrock intake anf 4 barrel/ T5 transmission. Truth is I don't need first gear. I do think I might be able to just sit and spin if I tried hard enough. Very light car with an engine with a TON of torque. Thanks in advance.
