Replacing a lug/stud.
 

Ok im gunna sound super noobish, but how do i change a lug on my car? I dont mean the lug nut, but the actual stud. I know i need to pull off the rotor and etc, but im not sure on the specifications. Whats needed to do this? My dad said i would some type of seal, and obviously a new stud. The reason why im doing so is because i managed to have a stupid moment and stripped a lug nut, lets not go further into details.

Umm, take it off, beat the stud out, get a new stud, knock it in, after u knock it in, put an old lug nut on it, tighten it with an impact gun EXTREMELY TIGHT so it pulls the new stud in, and then back ur lug nut off and WA-LA, your done.

How does one take the rotor off?

Chock the wheels

jack car up

remove lug nuts from wheel

remove wheel

remove brake caliper with bracket attached

remove rotor.

Yeah, your rotors held on by the wheel, and once the wheel is off, its very lightly held on by your caliper and pads. Your caliper has two bolts on the back, and take those off and it all slides off, dont loose the position of your pads, make sure front and rear stay that way.

Then all you gotta do is pop the little hub boot off, and loosen that huge nut that holds the hub assembly onto the spindle/axle (depending on front or rear)

Then when loosened, the hub assembly will slide off, then you can get to the back side of the stud. I've always beat it out with a hammer, but im a hillbilly, someone else here may say something different.

According to AM they said you dont even need to pull the rubber cap off, it just comes right off after the caliper and mounts are off. :confused:

He added that AFTER you remove the rotor from the hub your next step will be to remove the hub from the car.

So you have to remove the wheel hub as well? Ugh fuck now im confused.

LOL well if they really said that they are retarted, because how else would your hub, breaks, and wheel and tire stay on if there wasnt a bolt holding the hub on. I'm gonna list this step by step. EASY to read.

Remove your 5 lug nuts.

Pull your wheel off.

Loosen the two bolts behind the caliper, ones bigger than the other.

Remove the caliper, and bracket with pads, dont pull the pads out.

The rotor will then slide off.

You will then be looking at the hub, and it will have a gear on the back if you have ABS.

Pop the boot off.

Loosen the hub nut. Its big.

Pull left and right, to pull the hub off.

Be careful and not mess up the bearing or tear it apart, if this is a front side.

On the back side of the spindle you will see the 5 little notches, which are the backs of studs.

Studs have nothing holding them in, they are pressed in.

Knock the stud out with a hammer. Be careful not to hit other studs and ruin them.

It will fall out of the back side.

Put a new stud in, knock it in as much as u can lightly.

Put an old useless lug nut that isnt stripped on the new stud.

Tighten it down with an impact, very tight.

Back off the lug nut and its complete, you just have to work your way backwards and put everything back together the way you take it off.

First time may take 2 hours max, next time you do it will take almost 30 mins. Its very simple.

K now i got it. When i pull the hub off, will i have to re-press the bearing? Whats the easiest way to loosen the hub nut?

The bearing is already pressed into the hub, so it wont slide out. If you ever have to replace the bearing, you buy a whole new hub that comes complete with 5 studs.

This is a front wheel right?

And I use a big 3/4 drive ratchet, with whatever size socket.

Yea its my driver side front if i remember correctly. Im sure i have big enough wrenches and drives just not sure if they are the right size lol.

I somehow sheared four of my lugs off about 2 weeks ago(yeah, my wheel was held on by ONE lug!) , i just replaced my whole damn hub. Just follow those directions. I had to borrow a socket from autozone to get the hub nut off, i didn't have anything that big

Ok, progress as of tonight. I got the rotor and etc off, got the stud out. Right now im working on shredding the paint off my calipers..i have some work ahead of me..

To get the paint off of your calipers, use brake cleaner. The paint will come right off. Its highly acidic, wear gloves. and as the blendtec CEO would say "Brake cleaner smoke, Don't breath this!"

Cool,luckily I bought some of this when I bought new fluid. I think ill be alright without gloves though
