MM, AP or custom bars
I am planning on doing a 4 pt cage..nothing crazy.
Was looking at the MM 4 pt w/ fixed lateral and diagonal cross braces. Anybody recommend either the MM, Auto Power or just a custom 4pt. |
I was going to go with the MM when/if I ever got the money for one.

do you want a genuine roll cage or just a roll bar? 1 will save your life under most circumstances, the other will help but isn't as tough as most people think.
If you want it to save your life when you put the car on its lid at 100mph, then get a custom chrome-moly DOM .120 wall full cage and have fun getting in and out of your car. If you want a bolt-in, it doesn't really matter as long as it's made of steel. NO ERW tubing in roll bars/cages. |
Would a bolt in roll bar provide anything other than an aesthetic appearance? Would a roll bar tie in the back half to make that part of the body more rigid? Would the lateral bars provide enough strength to prevent the top from smashing your head?
These are general questions I have and not questioning the OP. I'm just trying to understand the roll bar for general use. To me a roll bar makes complete sense for a convertible. |
a common bolt-in roll bar will help chassis rigidity a good bit, weld it in and it's even better. Crash worthiness is generally not significantly enhanced with a bolt-in bar unless it's using big mounting plates on both sides and those have been welded down. Nothing short of a full real cage is going to help much in a high speed crash.
basically thick metal, big base plates, DOM .120 wall mandrel bent tubes, and weld it in. It'll help a little in safety and a lot in chassis rigidity. |

Maybe I need one. I hope everyone has seen the video of the blue car that fliped at Hallett and went flat like a pancake due to just having a bolt-in roll bar.

Mine will be welded in for sure. Once its painted and put in I'm not taking that bitch out anyways. If I sell it, whoever buys it better not have kids.
