Problems with X-pipe...

Hey I'm new to this forum but i figured this is a good spotfor some answers. I recently installed the pypes X-pipe on my 00' Gt and having a few issues.

1.) the check engine light is coming up (which i think i just gotta check the 02 sensors). i heard theres a way to reset the system but i dont know how to do that.

2.) All i smell is exhaust in the car and and all around, ive been told my car sounds like and old truck now. I dont think so its just alotlouder.

3.) its having problems idling, itll start at 1000 drop then rev up to 2500. do i need to get a tuner?

to anyone who can help that would be awesome bc i dont want to take it to a shop for any work.

Thanks.
justin

Sounds like u just didn't get something tight and got a leak. Is it an off road x-pipe or u got cats? If it's an off road pipe ur engine light is on cause the back o2's r not reading right without the cats. You would need 2 get something 2 turn that off. A tuner will work but a set of mil eliminators r cheaper and do the trick. Like these: http://www.americanmuscle.com/stmilel.html

mil elims ftw.

both are correct.

check your shizzle, you got a leak.

Ok i ordered the elminators hopefully that helps... I couldnt feel any air coming out of the connections thats why its weird. sometimes the smell of exhaust gets overpowering at stop signs and such.. I could check it again though i know the driver side fitted weird where it connects to the exhaust. (its uncatted btw)
The elminators will stop the stalling out and weird idles as well?

thank you guys for the help.

If you have a leak, which clearly you do, the elims wont change that.

Leaks happen most commonly where the xpipe bolts to the factory manifolds...hard to stick your hand up there to check for a leak unless you are on a lift...hard but not impossible. If you smell exhaust, and your buddies tell you that your car sounds like an old truck, then you have a leak. fix that first before you worry about elims.

Your going to need elims eventually anyway. As zig said, common around the manifold.... especially if they cracked or shattered a gasket

yuppers.

also... the eliminator modules are cheaper, but a tuner like the SCT can turn off your rear oxygen sensors(same thing that elims do) and allow you to take full advantage of the new flow in the exhaust. If you can afford it, really a tuner is the best route.

I tried the wire in elims and they didn't work for me. so they are not a guarantee, the only real 100% way of turning off the CEL is with a tuner. I said screw it, they don't function for fuel trim(well less than 5% control) and won't affect performance they are merely there as a way for the computer to detect whether the cats are functioning. But if you have over whelming gas smell and truck noises then you definitely have a leak, most likely at the manifold. Thats where mine was when I was trying out an H-pipe. My guess for the leak at the manifolds is causing the sporadic idle as well since the front O2 sensors are getting misleading readings from excess fresh air entering the system before the o2s at the manifold connection.

I think the suggestion for the elminators was for the CE light not the leak.... other than that yeah its a leak its just a matter of finding it. I ordered the elim. so hopefully that clears the light if not than i'll have to look for a tuner (i'll need one eventually anyway)...

uncatted pipes will always smell a good bit more than catted pipes.

00GT00 12-26-2009 05:01 AM

yeah thats what i heard too. I'll just take it to this guy i know for the leaks and just keep the project going after that. thanks for the help everyone.

PureStang 12-26-2009 04:16 PM

if you have no cats, your gonna smell the exhaust more...just nature of the beast. i love when i come to stop lights...the smell of that exhaust is awesome!

00GT00 12-27-2009 04:18 AM

I love the smell too, but long drives from work to home breathing that in can get a little overpowering. I was thinking of getting a tuner to help it run better. i heard good things about SCT and diablo... any reccomendations?

Danimal1209 12-27-2009 07:13 AM

sct gets my vote for sure. I have never tried a diablo but I know sct is great.

00GT00 12-28-2009 05:23 AM

thats what i hear that that tuner is one of the best.
