Covertible Top Slams Header
 
I recently had a new pump and cylinders installed in my 2003 convertible and now the top slams the header when the top is coming up. The shop that installed them says that are the correct cylinders and pump and they are not adjustable but I can't say I believe them. My old pump was weak and leaking and the passenger cylinder was leaking so not old was the top a bit slow but very noisy and would go up uneven at the start so I had to keep an eye on it so as not to twist the frame. The new pump and cylinders (I had them replace both) is very fast and quiet but does not stop a few inches from the header like before or any other Mustang convertible I know of but drive it to or on to the header. It happens so fast, hard and with such force that I am afraid it will damage the header, pins in the top or break the windshield. I mean this top slams the header. The first time I put the top up at the shop it scared the daylights out of me. They also had it wired back wards at first so the switch was working in reverse. They said they just went red to red and black to black on the pump which tells me it can't be a Ford pump or it should have been right. Any insight would be very helpful. I have told the shop owner I am not satisfied and he is looking into what can be done. :(

They probably bought two motors that weren't ford...Ask the shop owner or whoever where he ordered them. And thats surprising, mines a 2000 vert and ive never had any problems with the motors. You can also try taking your finger off the button before it touches and barely touch it or again stop it like half inch away from the header and just use the clamps for the rest of the way.

I only show 1 pump and 2 hydraulic cylinders - no motors. I did try releasing the button sooner but it's a tough call when to release as it goes from 18" away to snap and slam. It does not come down in any sort of controlled fashion so once the last section of top starts to fold down toward the header it just happens. I think it hits hard enough that if your hand was anywheres on the header it would break it. (not that your head should ever be on the header when raising the top)

Wow thats pretty bad. Definatly something wrong, maybe they picked wrong cylinders for like...lifting stuff. Hell idk man. Would have to talk to the guy that put em on or ordered em. For the time bieng i wouldnt use ur top if you have a choice, otherwise it might destroy your seals.

No one has anything to suggest how or why this is happening? How to correct it or has it happen to them? I find that had to believe with all the Mustang convertibles on the road.

i would guess it was installed wrong or they used the wrong parts. sounds like your only two options. take it back and get it done right

I would be Leary of a shop that already installed it backwards once. Wish I could help, but I don't have a vert.
