ABS - Traction Control Lights
 

Looking for some insight. On my 2000 GT Conv (69,000 miles) my Abs and traction control lights were coming on together intermittantly. I searched the threads and it seems like the abs wheel sensors are normally the problem. I changed out the front 2 wheels with new sensors last night and unhooked my battery to reset the code. Unfortunatly now just my Abs light is on and my traction control light is off but does not function. I have only driven it about a mile and will see what happens today.

Any idea's / comments?

Rear sensors? there is one at each wheel.

I pulled my rear sensors to get that very same effect. I would suggest hitting the exciter wheels with a little cleanser and cleaning the grime off them. The layer of crud they build up can block or partially block the signal and cause a malfunction light.

I couldn't stand a car that made any decisions for me so I disabled mine. I really don't recommend it unless you've had some real performance driving training... it's a LOT easier to spin or lock up the binders.

If the ABS and traction control light are blinking then you should of just taken out the rear sensor for the ABS in the rear axle and cleaned it or replaced it. Though its just a magnet really so I would pull it out and clean it because they hardly ever fail. They just get really dirty with metal shavings and nastiness. Because traction control is in the rear of the car not the front.

I had a friend try to read the fault code at his shop to find out which side in the rear I should start on but the reader wouldnt pick up the code. We tried a better more sophisticated code reader but it still would pick up a code.

Has anyone else had this issue? I am going to try cleaning the rear abs sensors regardless, but it seems odd that the fault code isn't apparent to the reader?

You need a specific ABS reader. The regular OBD-II scanners won't work.

Yep they don't read those codes threw there. That's the reason it has its own light to let you know something is up with it.

Well I took the rear calipers off and cleaned both rear wheel sensors really well even ran some fine sandpaper around the sensor pin. Went about 5 miles and no light, got home shut the car off and restarted and the abs and traction control light were on again??!!!
I need some help with this one - I have replaced the front sensors, I guess I will have to replace the back ones as well? Wish I could find out which one is bad or if there in another issue without going to the stealership??!!

I'd venture a guess and say a faulty rear sensor, seeing as how both fronts are new. If the sensors are cheap just replace em both. I'm having this same issue, isn't really bugging me yet as it's super sporadic but one of these days I'll scan it at work and see what comes up.

I think you might be right. The day after my last post the lights didn't come on for 35 miles. Then next start up out for about another 30 miles. Before I cleaned the rears it was on pretty much all the time, so I may have just helped a faulty rear sensor. Do you think it is worth having the dealer scan the code or just replace both the rear sensors - They are not cheap, but neither is a dealer scan. Putting the car away for the winter in a couple of weeks anyway.

Well, weigh the costs I guess. If a dealer scan plus a sensor is more expensive than just buying 2 sensors I'd say buy the 2 sensors. See if the dealer might cut you a deal, they scan for free, you buy the parts from them or something like that. Course if you're parking it, maybe just ignore it and save some cash over the winter, deal with it next summer...
