Are Occasional WOT Runs Safe?
I just purchased a used 2000 GT as my first car and life is even sweeter now!
But I'm just curious as to one thing. Are occasional WOT runs hurtful to the engine, drivetrain, or transmission? I'm normally very easy on the throttle but occasionally like to dig in a little. I haven't had the car for very long and it has a rebuilt engine as per how I purchased it (I'm assuming the intake manifold defect for that year was the culprit) and I just want to make sure I'm not doing any harm. I know that the purpose of a redline is the critical engine components are not manufactured to operate at that high speed, but don't you get the best power just into the red? What spirited driving I have done ended in my shifting just after 6k. Just wanted to make sure I'm doing no harm and glad to be hear... Kyle B. |
I wouldn't rev past 6k.

Congrats on the Mustang and to the Boards.
As long as the rebuilt motor has a couple hundred breakin miles on it, youre be fine. Enjoy the car but dont hurt yourself. As Switch said keep it in the 55 to 6k range. Thanks King |

Yeah, the car really doesn't make a lot of power after 4500-5k anyway, so running anything past that is kind of pointless.
I'm just as guilty of running right @ or over 6k though, only at the track, but I've got to get myself out of that bad habit. |
I let mine tap the rev limiter everyone once in a while. And I always use the 2-step to get some extra attention at the red lights. My rev limiter is safe though. It's not like the factory speed governed rev limiter.

2 step ftw lol

I'm a sissy and never go much beyond 5K, 5.5K if I'm racing.

Its a motor its made to be driven and has a limiter so you can't over rev it and hurt it. Feel free to let it rip. I drive my shit hard and powershift it,spray it,race it etc.. and its fine. In short it will be fine to drive it hard.

drive it like you stole it

these lil engines like the rev. let her rip. my red line is set at 6200 last time i accidentally bounced it lol

Thanks for the inputs guys.. glad to hear some thoughts. I'm getting a bit off topic from my original question, but where do these engines make the most power through what RPMs?
