White smoke after Idling?
 

Yesterday I noticed while waiting at a drive through after my car idled for about 2-3 min after i gave it a good rev to about 2k it blew out white smoke so I was like :confused:. I let it idle another 2 min and then another 2k rev and same poured out the tail pipes bunch of white smoke any ideas what this could be? No check engine light and engine pulls strong. it has about 135k on the motor. I have an off road x. temperature outside was about 65-70 degrees if it matters. I have the diablosport tune with a little bit advanced timing and I run 93 chevron or shell gas. Engine doesnt burn oil. until 3 4k miles i have 2 add another quart but I have heard this is a common prob. Any ideas on what this prob is?:confused:

Burning a quart every 3-4k miles is not normal at all on mod motors. I would check for leaks under the car of course, and also check to make sure the PCV system is working correctly.

As for the white smoke is this after the car is warmed up or right when you first start it?

Sounds like a leaky head gasket

White smoke means your coolant or too much fuel is entering the cylinder. However, the latter would throw a code so I'm w/ Lazerred6, sounds like you need head gaskets. And considering your mileage, it would be best to replace both.

I'm with bass and laser on this one as well. White smoke is usually indicative of a blown head gasket or running way (way way) rich. Blue-ish grey smoke is burning oil and black smoke is too much carbon (usually a lean condition).

I don't think it's blown yet but it's on it's way out and at this point it would be a simple fix. If you let it go you could be in for serious issues

It is after it is warmed up. How much would it cost to replace the leaky head gasket? Is this something for the DYI or shop?

It's not that tough of a job as far as I know. All that matters is if you feel comfortable removing your heads cleaning the surfaces and putting in new gaskets

with a haynes manuel some time and the right tools I think almost anyone could do it

Again I'm with Laser. If it goes, you could have to get the heads and block(? I don't know if it is cast or alluminum) decked because alluminum warps so quick. You should also get new head bolts. Most head bolts expand when they are torqued, so re-using them is a bad idea in most cases. You can usually diy if you have the inclination and a rebuild manual of some sort (chiltons, haynes, factory, etc.). This does, however, give you the chance to look into buying high compression gaskets if they sell them . . .
