Few Questions

I forgot some of the questions, but I've been busy and I got a new toy. Someone has been letting air out of my tires, enough for me to tell when I'm on the highway switching lanes or even just bad gruves. See I have custom valve stem covers and whatever, I tightened them so no one can take them and well they're lose some how. I know, bad idea if I get a flat or slow leak, but I rather not get my shit stolen.

1. I was told not to max the PSI on my tires, so I need help, because I rather not risk my tires because they're not cheap.

Tires: Toyo Proxes 4 245/45 ZR17 99W 50 PSI Max Press

2. What kind of floor mats are good? The plastic/rubber ones or the standard carpet type? Mine are pretty much wearing out now.

3. How do I find out what kind of shifter I have (manual)? It's an aftermarket one, but I can't figure out what kind. :/

Ps. I am rough on my car, so I don't know if 50 PSI is good for that or not. When I have time I'll post pictures of my new toy and other vechiles. Thanks in avdance.

Flynnster 04-29-2009 08:24 PM

50PSI sounds really high.

Must See 04-29-2009 08:26 PM

its normally 35 PSI for the tires. Look on the inside of your door jamb and it'll tell you what your pressure should be.

Then again it would also help to know what kind of vehicle your talking about. Different vehicles require different PSI

Switch 04-29-2009 08:26 PM

1. The psi you're supposed to inflate to isn't the number on the tire, but the number on your door jam. (I think that's where it's at)

2. They all do the same thing. Get rubber if your feet are dirty often.

3. Take pics?

I didn't think knowing what kind of Mustang I had would matter. Um 1995 Ford Mustang GT 5.0, aftermarket Cobra R Rims. I would look in the door jam for the PSI, but isn't that for stock rims and tires?

It seems when the carpet gets wet you get that nasty smell. Also seems that it wears out faster, so I wasn't sure.

Oh and I think I have a 5.0 Pro Shifter, because that's what it kind of feels like from looking at pictures. Mine is covered, so not completely sure. I just know it's slap shift, short shift.

SeanStang 04-29-2009 08:52 PM

He meant pics of the shifter. Lol.

Yeah I know, I was just posting it for the hell of it. Also so you can see the tires and rims.

I would take pictures of it, but you really can't see anything. but the nob. :/

SeanStang 04-29-2009 08:59 PM

Take off the knob and take off the shifter bezel and slide it up, you'll see the shifter then. No other of telling lol. Can't just assume it's a 5.0 Pro, there are tons of after market short throws.

Must See 04-29-2009 09:01 PM

regardless of aftermarket rims your PSI should be the same as stock. 50 is way to high. Im running 35/36 psi on my tires. Just look on the inside of your door jam. 50 psi is a good way to have a blow out.

I assumed because of the way these look

Mine hast that adjusting thing too. I always like to pay with it, oddly. Thanks, but I'm kind of afraid to take it off, because it wont go back on.

Then I'm lucky, because I went up to 50 PSI last Friday when I went to the beach, but then Monday or so I noticed it was low again. LoL

Must See 04-29-2009 09:07 PM

as for floor matts I went with rubber
You can kinda seem them in the picture below. They work great. Normally wouldnt have bought them but I got them for free so I couldn't say no.

I'm uploading the pictures of the shifter, I couldn't find a name and now the console thing wont stay in on the right side of it. :/ Sorry if there big.

Um yeah positive, my father got this guy kicked out of the apartmeants, but it's not his fault. The guy shouldn't have been giving the owner shit and all this other crap. But we think he's flatting our tires. See my problem is that my cap was tighten, only way to get it off is to untighten it, with like a adjustable wrench. I put air in my tires Friday night before I left for the beach. I got them almost up to 50 PSI or whatever the gage at the gas station said. Came home early Saturday morning, haven't really drove the car until Monday and then there low again. I can tell when I'm on the highway, because when I filled them up before I left the beach it made a difference.

Edit: If they had a leak wouldn't my tires go like completely flat? Because I haven't filled them up all last week until Friday, but I really only remember noticing it Friday that I can think of. But they have been low since this weekend and I still haven't filled them up.

WNRacing 04-29-2009 09:24 PM

1. 30-35 PSI is a good safe number for a standard tire, whether it's aftermarket or not. Anything higher or lower can cause uneven wear, either in the middle of the tire or on the outside edges. The max pressure is there so that the tire shop knows how much they can inflate the tire when they are trying to get the bead to pop onto the rim. In short, 50 PSI = no.

2. Seriously? A floor mat is a floor mat. You can get some cheapo's from Auto Zone, or more expensive ones from AM or somewhere else aftermarket. If you have odd smell coming from the carpet, it would be a good idea to either have the carpets steam cleaned and heat extracted or just replace the carpet. You can usually get molded carpet aftermarket for somewhere in the neighborhood of $100 +/-..

3. Take the shifter knob off, pop the shifter bezel out, unplug the cig. lighter, pull the bezel completely off. There are 4 small bolts holding the dust cover & boot on the shifter, take those out and lift the cover off. If it is an aftermarket shifter it will usually have the brand name engraved on the top of it. Did it this weekend and it took about 15 min, going slow. Easy as pie.

WNRacing 04-29-2009 09:26 PM

Looks like a Pro-5.0 shifter to me.

BikerSk8rKid 04-29-2009 09:34 PM

WNRacing - Thanks, that helped a lot. Yeah I was thinking the 5.0 Pro Shifter, for some reason it's stuck in my head. Maybe that's because I read it on the Craigslist posting before I bought the car, but then again I don't really remember.

The reason why I think my tires are low (yeah I should check it) is because when I'm on the high way and I swing the back in side to side, it moves lik it's on gel or something. Hard to explain. It never happened before, but then again it could be because my Rear Sway Bar broke and I had to take it off. Oh and the carpet is clean, just has a bold spot where my foot sits for the clutch. LOl When it rains and it gets wet, it has a nasty smell if it doesn't dry up. :/ So rubber or carpet doesn't matter?

SeanStang 04-29-2009 09:41 PM

Carpet is just a personal preference really. As far as tire pressure definitely in the 30-35 range. If you start seeing it ware in the middle take out some air, if the sides are wearing more then add some air.

Teufelshunde3/5 04-29-2009 10:40 PM

If your rear sway bar broke then that's why the rear end is "feeling like it's on gel" Get that fixed before you wreck your car.

The tires should be in the 30-35psi range no more. If you've been overfilling them you may have wrecked the seal and they are now leaking slowly. Take them to a shop and have them test them or if you have something big enough to do it in, pull your wheels one at a time and hold them under water to see if any air is escaping. This gives you a good oppertunity to thoroughly clean them as well. If you blew the bead the only way to fix it is to get them tubed or get new tires. Small leaks can be plugged. Either buy a kit and do it yourself or take it to a shop and have them do it.

NEVER trust the gages on the air hoses at gas stations. Get yourself a decent air gage and use that to check the pressure as you fill them so you don't fuck up your exspensive tires. I was filling up my tires a while back at a gas station because of a slow leak in both rear tires. I filled them till the gage on the air hose said 35psi, then checked them with the digital gage I had bought a few weeks before. Guess what, the pressure in my tires read 47psi on both of the tires I'd just filled. The gage on the air hose was off by 12psi, which now that I've thought about it is not supprising considering how much they get tossed around.

Once you've figured out if the tires are leaking or not find a shop that can fill them with nitrogen. It's better for your tires, won't leak as much and isn't as succeptable to heat and cold as compressed air, which means your tires will remain a more constant pressure handle better and last longer. I had mine done at Big O Tires. It will cost @ $5-6 per tire the first time but it's free refills after that and they'll rotate them for free anytime you bring it in to get them filled.

Well the Rear Sway Bar has been broken for a few months now and it just now started feeling like this, ever since I noticed the tires were low or thought they were. I ca't get a rear sway bar because I can't find one, unless I get an aftermarket one for like what $200? Yeah, I'm not trying to put money into my car. I had LesSwab do shit to my tires and they did the PSI and everything. What I don't get is why my vavle caps were lose, because I had tighten them with a adjustable wrench so no punk can steal them. Yeah I should probably take them in, my problem with that is I can't do it with the tires on my car. Considering I have big balds spots on two tires and they think it's dangerous and would be there fault. When I filled them up (tires) it felt much better on the highway and wasn't doing it anymore.

Thank you!

Edit: Someone told me it's really good to have the Rear Sway Bar, but it's not something that's really really needed. Because it only comes with Sport Packages cars, so that means the V6's would be getting messed up if it was that bad. LoL. If there is a bad seal wouldn't my tires be flat by now? Because they're still the same or really they may not even have a problem, could be something else.
I do have a tire gage, but it's nothing fancey (spell check), it's just like the ones at the pump kind of. More of a bike gage, plasic thing that looks like a pen.

Teufelshunde3/5 04-29-2009 11:22 PM

Depends on how much of the seal was compromised. You may just have a slow leak from a nail, piece of glass, etc. Is it all 4 tires that keep getting low or just one or two? Try putting a drop of loc tight on the valve stem covers (not the permanent kind) and then tightening them up. If they're loose again, you know someone is fucking with you.

BikerSk8rKid 04-29-2009 11:22 PM

I just started to look at this one

and
I'm asing this guy just to sell the rear.
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/94-04...1%7C240%3A1318

This one is cheaper, but says it's not as thick as the first link.

Not true. Sway bar isn't necessary, hell the 6er's don't even come with a rear sway bar.

Yeah exactly what I was told, but then Dustin said it just handles shitty.

Yeah, well I mean it's good to have one, but your gunna wreck your car if you don't have one on lol. That's just ridiculous.

spike_africa 04-30-2009 08:11 AM

Get the carpet ones from AM.com with the Mustang logo. I have them and they are pretty cheap for the 4 piece set and very nice.

For tire pressure start at 35psi and see how they wear. You might need to go down/up depending on how the tire is wearing. Aka if the middle is wearing out faster then the tire is over inflated and needs to come down a few psi. If the outsides are wearing faster that means the tire has to little air in it and needs some more.

BikerSk8rKid 04-30-2009 04:11 PM

So the guy that I contacted on the Rear Sway Bar (second link) said no he will not sell it to me. He says I shnould go with an aftermarket Rear Sway Bar. :/ How much of a difference is it and why does it matter?

NewMustangMan 04-30-2009 04:32 PM

Just get an after market one lol! Hey have you fixed your Belt yet? Do that too lol!

I'm not trying to put money into it and I'm sure in the hell not spending $150 + for one. LoL I got a new toy and I'm after the 99-01 to 03-04 style Mustangs, I don't like the style of anything else. Also other reasons.

Na, I haven't actually, I got a new toy so I haven't done much. I was just talking to Ford about clips for the rear brake pads and they said $17 a pieace. Then he said $150 or something on a Rear Sway Bar, fuck that shit.

I'm just going to bid on this one at the last minute.
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...NA:MOTORS:1123

I'm about to head to AutoZone for a Tire Gage and hopefully clips for the rear brakes. My mechanic just said they have some or should.

But seriously why does it matter if it's Aftermarket or not, for the Sway Bar?

Edit: While I'm out buying shit, what kind of Belt should I get?
