Rear Cobra Brake Problem!!!

Ran into a pretty big problem with the rear Cobra brakes. The calipers rub the rotor, on the outside. I don't know how to fix this. I don't even know if I am going to be able to get the pads and everything to fit around the rotors. Turns out the Cobra rotors are about a 1/8th of an inch thicker than the regular v6/GT rotors.

So you're trying to use cobra rotors with the GT calipers? Is that what I'm reading correctly? If so, no it's not going to work.

Yeah, that's how it looks to me.. Maybe I'm mis-understanding something?

Everything that I've read indicated that the GT calipers and Mach/Cobra rear calipers are the same. Are they not? What are the differences? Seprate, but related; Do Cobra's use thinner pads?

JackThe Ripper 03-24-2009 05:11 PM

the mach1/cobra rear brake calipers are bigger...

hence the reason they sell Mach1/Cobra rear brake caliper.

the GT's are the same as the V6

Damn wtf. I have read that the rear calipers where the same as well. Just thought you needed the relocation mounts which I think I saw in the picture you have of all your goodies. I guess it's because the cobra/mach rear rotors are vented (making them thicker) needing the caliper structure to be bigger as well? :dunno:

I sont know 100% but i ASSUME they are different, or what would the point in buying something like this?

It's called brand equity mother fucker!

Cobra = better than normal.

lol

I'm pretty sure they are the same caliper...for the GT you need a special bracket that pushes the caliper out a bit.

I believe they sell the cobra rear calipers because they match the front cobra calipers.

bassman97 03-24-2009 07:54 PM

For the rear, Cobras and GTs have the same components except for a few parts. The Cobra has larger brackets and moan braces (to accommodate the larger rotors), larger rotors, and thinner pads (to accommodate the thicker rotors)

01FR500 03-24-2009 08:22 PM

Ok, I think I've just about got it figured out with you guy's help. The caliper bracket is wider, and the pads are thinner. I went and bought some cheap Wearever Gold pads from Advance Autoparts for the Cobra. And I used some spacers to move the bracket so it doesn't touch, but there is very little clearance. If these pads done make it fit then I am going to buy the Cobra bracket, which should be wider. If that doesn't work then I will return it all and buy complete Cobra rear calipers. In that case, I will have to put all the GT rear brake stuff back on unless the local Ford dealership can get me some rear calipers at a good price this week.

This should be all that is needed to install the rear brakes. Minus the rotors because obviously you already have those. Sounds like you are close.

I've got that.

I think my stock rear brakes are going back on. I can't get the calipers to fit over the pads. I 've got the pistion compressed as far as it will go and it won't fit over the thinner cobra pads. I might call the dealership to see if they have any for a decent price.

Yea different size... found that out trying to stick my old 15 inch drag rims that fit my gt onto my cobra and she was a no go

This guy has a really good write up about the rear brake swap.

http://www.2kgt.com/item.php?itemid=104

He shows you what to do to get the GT caliper bracket to fit over the Cobra rotor. You can always buy the caliper bracket for the Cobra instead of grinding down the GT one. Don't waste your money on buying the rear Cobra calipers as the GT and Cobra are the same. The Cobra caliper bracket cost about $60 each from Randy last year. Also, be carefully when buying brake pads. I went to my local Pep Boys and bought a set of Cobra rear pads. They were really for a GT not a cobra. The pads were way too thick. Went to Napa with wrong brake pad in hand and compare it to what they had. You could see the right pad was way thinner.

Don't get discourage. You’re on the right track. Since I just did this swap feel free to ping me if you have and questions or problems. Hope this helps.

Thank you very much, I've read alot of stuff by him on C-C and Corral, very detailed guy.

horspla2000 03-27-2009 01:12 PM

brackets

I was thinking early on the post that it seemed like you could widen that bracket to make it fit. :)

01FR500 03-27-2009 01:51 PM

I know I could have grinded it down, but at the moment I don't have the time, or a decent tool to do a good enough job for a critical part like the brakes. I got the bracket to fit on both sides in the end, but then I ran into another issue of the caliper not fitting over even the thinner Cobra pads, so they would have had to be widened as well. I just really didn't want to start altering the parts.

FoxRodder 03-27-2009 05:45 PM

I first did the 94-04 brake setup on my 87 and then later my uncle gave me the calipers from his Mach. When I got to the rear what I ended up doing was putting the Cobra model axle flange bracket, but I left the V6/GT calipers hooked up and how I got it to work was by swapping the slide pins from the V6/GT calipers into the Mach caliper brackets.

I had read the same thing about how the V6/GT calipers were identical to the Cobra spec calipers but it was not 100% true. The difference was that the slide pins interact with the calipers ever so slightly different. One had square ends and the other had like a semi-circle end.
