3.73's or 4.30's or sell and get 4.10's?

Well after getting my 4.30's for a great price (used), I found a deal on a 31spline 8.8 with a 3.73 from an Explorer. So now I'm looking for axles now.
I drive mostly city with occasional round trips (1,000miles). The car will be getting BBK long tubes installed as well. Am I crazy for doing 4.30's? I had 3.55's, 3.73's and 4.10's in my fox body GT with h/c/i and they were great, just not sure 4.30's will be the too much? Sell them both and do 4.10's?Thoughts and opinions appreciated.

4.30's are too much for a DD

4.10's and 3.73's are just right and i would stick with 4.10's(thats just me)

spike_africa 03-17-2009 07:10 AM

For best n/a setup at the track, 4.30's would be the best for a street/strip car for sure.

TUFF 4.6 03-17-2009 07:28 AM

I think that 1000 round trip would be a little hard with 430's. How tall is your rear tires?

MidNiteBlue 03-17-2009 08:23 AM

I am running 275/40/17's same as stock size = 245/45/17.
I'm sure for around town the 4.30's would definitely be potent!

01FR500 03-17-2009 08:46 AM

4:30 would be too much for me. I would rather have 4:10, and will personally be going with 3:73 when I do get gears. For a track only car or weekend car 4:30 would be fine I think, but not for 1000 mile trips.

How many of you have actually had 4.30's in your car?

I haven't, but that doesn't mean I can't offer my opinion.

Blue, if you're really worried that the 4.30's might be too much gear, go with the 4.10's. If you do occasional 1,000 mile round trips and do the majority of your driving in the city, you may logically want to go with whichever gear best fits your common driving habits.

If you go with the same logic, I've never experienced 4:30 gears in the OP's car, so I should go away, and there is no point in the OP even asking a question. I've experienced all sorts of gears, in my car and in others. The whole tread is based on opinion and experiences, no one can make up the OP's mind but himself. I like 3:73 gears because I don't like cruising at high RPMs, what high RPM's is, is opinion. All we can offer is opinion and experience. There is some tech we could provide, but basically it's all turns into opinion on what is desirable. Just like in another current thread about changing a side mirror. I've never done it, but I know how to do it. Should I not tell the person how to do it? Just not a good argument is what I'm saying.

Everyone is entitled to their opinions, thats what this thread is for...however, if someone does have 4.30's in their DD it would be great to hear from them. I've never personally driven with them on a daily basis, just in a car at the track.
I really feel that the Bullitt intake allows the 4.6 better breathing up top and keeps the curve nice and flat as compared to the P.I. intake, something else to think about? Hmmmm

Never said you cant offer an opinion, that IS what the internet is for and full of. But its an opinion based on no personal experience. My advice, Im sure there is a mustang club local to you. Ask someone with 4.30's in their car to take a ride and even drive their car. Judge for yourself based on personal experiences whether 4.30's are the right gear for you.

Miscommunication here...my original post was so that everyone could give their opinions and that I appreciated any and all feedback. That's why we are on here for advice, technical and otherwise.

In a way, you are right. But the OP specifically said 'thoughts and opinions appreciated'. He didn't ask for hardcore, carved in stone facts. One doesn't necessarily have to have personal experience to have an opinion on something.

About the local club, what is he going to do, walk up to every single person there and ask them what gear ratio they have? That would be a royal pain if the club was of a decent size. Or better yet, is he supposed to stand on the corner with a sign hanging around his neck that reads "if you have 4.30's, let me, a complete and total stranger, drive your car" and wait for people to come to him?

MidNiteBlue: Here are some threads from another forum from people that have had a similar question as you and people that actually have 4.30's that may be able to help you with your decision.

If you want more of them, just go to allfordmustangs.com and search for 4.30 gears. :) True, it is not the same as actually riding in or driving in a car that has 4.30's, but it may be able to give you a relative idea of how they are.

TUFF 4.6 03-17-2009 12:43 PM

I have run alot of gears though the years. 430's, 456's and 488's are great for power and "Butt-o-Meter" feel but is hard as hell on a motor.

I think that you would be more than happy with the 410's and still be able to drive the car pretty much where ever you want to go. I do agree with Dan, try to find someone with the 430's and get the skinny from them. Good Luck

MidNiteBlue 03-17-2009 01:48 PM

Black Sunshine,
I appreciate the work you did in searching for me!
Thanks again guys for your input. I may install the 3.73's since they are installed on the 31spline 8.8 already or sell both and do the 4.10. Kinda debating for awhile. I would like to get them installed over Spring Break next month. BTW I'm in Tampa

No need to be a smart ass about this. Many clubs have their own forum, would be easy enough to post on there. Havent you even met a few people from FL on this board?

I felt I had the need to be a smart-ass. If I didn't, I wouldn't have said anything. I stand by my comment.

Yes, I have met people from these forums. But my inclination from what you posted was that you expected him to just go to a meet and walk around asking people their respective gear ratios, not post on their forums first and then go to a meet, which would be a better idea. Even still, he doesn't have to literally have personal experience to make a decision. I would venture to say that more than half the people on these boards had no personal experience with a particular gear and just posted a thread instead of going to a meet first.

MidNiteBlue: Check the southeast get-to-gethers forum. We have had 3 meets so far. 2 in Orlando, 1 in Lakeland. There are about 10 or so of us from the central Florida area and we try to meet up at least every other month or so. Our last meet was this past weekend. You should check it out! :)
