Price quote for replacing clutch

This local transmission shop quoted my repair at $700 to replace all components of the clutch. 350 parts - 350 labor. I mentioned buying a cluth kit myself and just having him install it to save money and the manager suggested i let them order the parts so their warranty will cover it. Also the estimated labor time was four hours which seemed a little stretched. What do you guys think?

they write down the labor time that is in the book, most of the time it takes half of that amount for a good tech, that is how tech bill 10+ hours in a 8 hour day, is the write the book time down, and charge that, it does not matter if it takes a shorter amount of time...

Wow sounds way high... I brought in my clutch to the shop where I got it replaced. They charged me about 240 including the resurfacing of the flywheel. Most places wanted anywhere from 250 to 300 for labor. I would say get ur own clutch that way you know exactly whats going into ur car. especially if u have performance parts on ur ride. That warranty crap I hardly ever believe it usually if its good quality parts by the time they go bad that place probably won't even be there anymore... lol

I would not get a stock replacement clutch, I would upgrade to something better for sure.

The car is completely stock. The only performance parts i might be interested in would be exhaust and air intake. What kind of aftermarket clutch would you recommend?

an aftermarket clutch is roughly about $350 depending on which you get, and if i were you i'd go with a spec 2 clutch. you get that stock pedal, but the knowledge that it is a higher performance part then stock. also, i would get the flywheel replaced, preferably with a lightwheight aluminum one. you could go the cheap way and get it resurfaced, however, don't. what year and engine do you have??

a performance shop in my area quoted me roughly $450 to replace the clutch and flywheel, pull out and re-install the transmission (its going to be rebuilt)

LOL. You guys are lucky. Clutch job on an Audi is around $1200.

go with a spec 2 clutch, and an aluminum fly wheel, and enjoy the new smoother shifts.

how is the transmission btw? a rebuild (depending on what is wrong with it) can cost $800-1000.

hell man, if you've got the money i say do a whole drive train upgrade and have them rebuild the tranny, and get an aluminum driveshaft, a 31" spline t-lok and 31" spline axles, and some 4.10 gears.

Do not get a Spec stage 2 for a stock car that is retarded. That is way to much clutch for a car that might get exhaust/intake. A spec stage 1 or Ford racing "King cobra" would be a good choice for you and your car.

Ps- Spec Stage 2 is not a very smooth setup compared to stock and is a much heavier peddle as well. Trust me I know I have one.

I agree with spike on this one upgrade a little but not stage 2. Stage one would be perfectly fine even if you do decide to mod it out in the future.

I just got my clutch replaced about a month ago. I shopped around a lot and the lowest i got was $500. I went back to the place i usually go to and they said they'ed match the lowest price i got. The total was $560 with taxes and parts and labor. They listed the labor at $193.50, Clutch cable at $71.55, and clutch kit $297.33. This also included the fly wheel resurfacing too. The guy told be i was killing them, that they barely got by even after buying parts and factoring in labor. It felt good.

3.5 hours to replace a clutch? Damn, they must be good. I'm on my fifth day and the trans just went back in.

As for the parts, look around. I got my Hays kit for $70 and if you look hard enough, you can find great deals.

Pyrosis 04-16-2009 07:53 PM

damn 350 for the installation...thas a bit, i got a spec stage 2 clutch with spec alum flywheel and the guy did it for about 145, thats with installing the aftermarket clutch cable kit too
