Which muffler?
 

I have a unique situation, and a muffler question. My 2008 V6 coupe was rear-ended about two weeks ago, and the left side of my brand new Ford Racing dual exhaust was destroyed, along with the left quarter panel, bumper, deck lid and frame rail. I also have a 2005 GT and was planning on replacing the stock mufflers with something a little louder. Due to the accident, I am going to just have the bumper cover on the V6 car replaced with a GT cover, and use the mufflers from the GT on the V6 coupe. I figure they will sound the same on the V6 as the Bullitt mufflers that came with the FR kit anyway. The left tailpipe in the FR kit is a stock GT pipe, so I'll just replace it. The X-pipe and the right side of the exhaust was not injured, so no need to replace them.

My question is which muffler is the best choice for a good rumble on the GT. I don't want to spend a fortune on high-end mufflers, so I have narrowed it to a choice between the JBA's and the Flowmasters. The are about the same price ($300) from CJ Pony Parts. The JBA mufflers are all stainless with polished tips, and the Flowmasters are aluminized and painted flat black with stainless tips. Both would look good on the car (Mineral gray with Parchment convertible top - rare color combo), so the real question is which mufflers would sound the best? I want something a little louder than the stock GT sound, but not so loud as to be annoying with the top down. Actually, this is my wife's car, and she brought up the topic of making the car a little louder (don't cha love it!).

I would vote for anything other then flowmasters.

I installed a set of JBA mufflers on the 2005 GT about a week ago. The reason I went with the JBA's was a friend had them on his GT500 for a couple of months and wanted something different, so I got the pair for $225, which is about $100 less than new. Anyway, they sound great at idle and through the gears, but I have to admit there is some highway roar at about 60 mph. It is not unbearable, but I imagine it could be annoying on a long road trip. But, we don't drive the car that much, and my wife did not complain after a 200 mile round trip last weekend, so I guess everything is o.k. From what I have read, it is difficult to get a louder muffler on these cars without some trade-off in resonance, due to the "rear-muffler" design. Some mufflers are being advertised as eliminating this problem, but I didn't want to spend an extra $300 or $400 to find out. Like I said, the car sounds pretty wicked going through the gears...and that's what we all want anyway!

I am using the stock GT mufflers on the wrecked 2008 V6 car, to replace the destroyed Bullitt mufflers. I also put a GT bumper on the car, since it had to be replaced anyway, so I don't have to reinstall the exhaust cutout trim pieces. There shouldn't be any difference in the sound between the Bullitts and the stock GT mufflers on the V6, so I'll just put some nice chrome tips on them later. The body shop painted the car yesterday, so I should have it back in a couple of days.

Anyway, I just wanted to share my muffler experience. It was basically a good choice. As long as the wife doesn't complain about it being too loud on the highway, I am good to go. Happy New Year to all the forum members.

cuz there is a black bullitt in my town that has glasspacks and it sounds mean as hell and a girl drives it and ohhh mannnn you can hear that cam, its one of the best mustangs ive ever heard

I have heard glasspack on a v6 stang with dump setup they sound ok but I still like the flowmaster 40's on my option

Is there a website that gives you the sound of different exhaust sounds for mustangs, just curious.... or a 98 v6 mustang:confused:

Look right here on these forums, Videos section, exhaust vids, most are clips for 99/04 vids though but some great sounding mustangs out there. SLP's sound good in some vids, but in person they will rip your ears apart, IMHO.. :eek:

That is the truth, but they will only rip your ears apart at WOT. If you finesse it and know at what point the exhaust will be the loudest, it is easier to control.

When I first got my axle-backs installed and the rest of my exhaust was still stock, it was tolerable. Then I got my headers and X pipe and for probably the first month, it snapped, crackled, and popped. Now since I have 'worn them in' they just sound like they're going to murder everything within a 20 mile radius. I love them and couldn't be happier.
