02 GT shift grinding

HI, I have a 02 GT (tr-3650) that has started to grind in every gear, something new here. I just installed a billet quadrant and new cable?
Prior to the new installation, grinding happened on second gear and hard to engage reverse.:(

Did you adjust the cable? Also, how many miles you have? May be time for a clutch but make sure it isn't your cable being too loose.

Sounds almost like your synchronizers are out. That would cause your gears to not be able to line up properly in order to change gear, therefore causing the gears to grind, and would also make getting into reverse difficult. I'm not sure if you can even fix such a thing, you might be looking at a new trans. Can you change gears while the car is sitting still?

it would be werid if all the syncros went bad at the same time i agree with bassman adjust the cable, if thats not it maybe time for a clutch kit.
side note does the reverse gear even have a syncro, not sure

I don't know. I was just talking to my dad about that and he has no idea. Transmissions are, to me, the most complicated piece on a car hands down.

my friend, i recently had a similar problem. the transmission started to grind and even pop out. mostly when going into 4th or in reverse. the clutch would also alternated between very hard and normal. i figured it was the synchros, and i asked a few ppl in my club, and apparently its a common problem with the tr3650. so i had it looked at by some mustang specialists in my area. he told me that clutch cable was binding and that the tranny has had a very rough life. he said the pressure plate was also rough, and the synchros were also not in the best shape. also the mechanic smelled gear oil coming from my tranny.

so he changed the oil in the tranny to a synthetic (i forget which, but i have it written down some where), and he also installed a steeda clutch cable. i wish i had also gotten a quadrant and firewall adjuster, but regardless, after driving around with the new items and oil, the problem has smoothed out. it still grinds a little, but the clutch hasn't popped out of gear yet.

in regards to the pressure plate and synchro, the mechanic says the only way to really fix those problems is to rebuild the tranny or just get a new one. the transmission will still last me as long as i don't beat on the car.

removeing the pressure plate is the same process as removeing the clutch btw. pull the driveshaft, put a trannty jack under the transmission, remove the tranny cross member and all the harness' connected to the tranny, unbolt the bell houseing bolts, drop the transmission, unbolt the pressure plate from the flywheel, replace the clutch/pressure plate, and bolt every thing back together. recently did clutch kit(clutch, pressure plate, and throw out bearing ) in a Kia Sportage took us i think 4 days, working about an hour and a half a day to have the transmission back in place but it was just me and a few friends working on it at school, were not professionals

Yes, reverse is synchronized, except for the T5.

INtZ 10-27-2008 07:49 AM

i thought there was a mustang transmission that the reverse gear wasn't syncroed couldn't remember

bassman97 10-27-2008 08:14 AM

Yes, as I said, that was the T5.

Might want to start a new thread.

I recently just went through the same thing with my 04 Cobra, and it just need the clutch cable to be adjusted. The reverse lockout is very stingy and wants to have full release before letting you go into reverse.

It could be a multitude of things though. The lockout switches do go bad, so it may be something there. But I'd try adjusting the clutch cable first.
