Transmission Removal
 

This weekend I will be replacing my clutch. Any tips/tricks on removing and installing the tranny (TR3650)? I'm aware that I have to keep the driveshaft in the tranny or cover the output and for install, to use cut off bolts to guide the tranny. Anything else?

Have an extra pair of hand with you, I've never messed around with a mustang transmission but I know it's always good to have another guy

You may need swivel sockets and alot of extentions to reach some of the harder to reach bolts as I had to when I worked on my t5.

i only know how to change oil sorry.

Don't lie, you can't even do that.

You will need alot of extensions and swive sockets to get to a few of the bolts. The starter is kind of a pain in the ass, but doable with the help of a friend. Don't forget about all the electronics that need to be unplugged on the tranny and the o2 sensors that have to be disconnected as well. The tranny will leak badly if you dont plug the end of it. I just drained the fluid out before hand as it needed to be changed anyhow.

The biggest pain in the ass was the pilot bearing on the motor. I tried to use the autozone puller and it just didn't work. I had to take a dremel and cut it out without messing up the surface that the bearing goes into. It was the worst part hands down.

I know how much of a PITA the 3rd starter bolt is, tons of swivels, extensions, and a mirror came in handy for that for when I did the headers. As for the pilot bearing, I know the trick of pumping it full of grease and tapping a socket in to push it out but I'll only do that if the tool is useless. Just wish Ford made the trans and bellhousing separable to allow easier access to the bellhousing bolts.

+1, I took out a TH350 earlier this year with no help, and lugging that thing around with no extra hands kinda sucks.

1. Disconnect the battery

2. Unbolt the h-pipe and remove. Don't forget to disconnect your O2 sensors

3. Unbolt the starter, the bottom 2 bolts are easy, the top not so much. Use long extensions and come at it from the front of the engine snaking your way up abover the A-arm.

4. Unbolt the driveshaft and pull it out of the way

5. Unbolt the clutch cable cover and remove clutch cable

6. Unbolt all of the Bellhousing bolts (8 if I remember correctly) Swivels and extensions are your friends here. Also, remove the crossmember before the top bolts so you can have a little better access. If you have a tranny jack or a buddy, it is much easier to control and wiggle the tranny as needed.

7. Pull the tranny out. It does take some manuevering, up and down, side to side. Be patient.

8. Unbolt the pressure plate, remove

9. Unbolt the Flywheel(impact wrench is easiest)

10. Remover pilot bearing (this sux) The pilot bearing puller tool I bought didn't really fit. What I did was put 2 of the 3 prongs in the hole of the bearing and worked it until it eventually came out.

11. Grease the hell out of the new Throw Out Bearing and reinstall on the clutch fork

Reinstall everything and torque to specs.
