cat question

so a guy at the shop says my cat is hollowing out and that it should be replaced and is the source of a sound ive been hearing.. so he says it will be about 1200 for a new oem one from ford, but is it possible to take a cat from say a 99/04 gt or mach and put it on mine? are they the same size?

if hes gonna charge that much, id just get an aftermarket mid pipe

htownv6 08-05-2008 09:56 AM

oh theres no way in hell i will pay anything close to that for it

PureStang 08-05-2008 09:58 AM

ive got the stock cats on but its custom after that... no crossover a.k.a. no midpipe

PureStang 08-05-2008 08:36 PM

then just get magnaflow high flow cats and just have them welded in. thats what i would do in your situation

1200.... lol.... 500 for parts, and 700 for the ol pocket huh?

yeah i was thinkin about high flow cats.. gotta link for me?
also would it matter if i just got one and for the one side thats goin bad or should i replace them both?

If your cats ore going bad I to would just go aftermarket. Summitracing.com carries all kinds of highflow cats. Just get universal ones without air tubes for whatever size piping your current exhaust setup is.

If your using 2 1/4" here is all the universal ones they have for that size.

For info on the Magnaflow cats, go to car-sound.com. Over there, you can view all the specs for all their cats and make a choice on which is best for your application. Probably one of the 49-state OBD-II cats for engine sizes up to 4.2L should be fine. Also, check out Jegs. Last time I bought my cats, they were a couple bucks cheaper there but Summit by far has the greater selection.

thanks for the link .. so im guessing i should order 2 and replace them both then?

98 STANG 08-06-2008 05:01 PM

yea its best to replace both

TUFF 4.6 08-06-2008 07:18 PM

Yes, replace both at the same time, the highflows will flow more than the OEM ones "hinst the name" Your system will not be balanced.
