Fluid Disposal

I have been searching online, and i havent found any straighforward answers. Maybe this will be an easy way to clear things up.
Where do you properly dispose of:
-brake fluid
-Coolant/Antifreeze
-Steering Fluid
-Transmission fluid

-and any other fluids i might have forgotten to mention. I was hoping this would be great reference for the aspiring do-it-yourselfer.

Everywhere is a little different.

We have a local disposal / dump that has a container for lubricants and another for anti-freeze.

Where I used to live, most of the auto parts stores had an oil tank for used oil - I always included the brake, PS, Tranny fluid in with it.

We also had "hazardous chemical" trash days twice a year where the county would come by and pick up all the paint / oil / gas / anti-freeze if you set it out by the curb.

As an attempt to be a good citizen, if none of those options are available, swing by a repair shop (maybe like a Sears or Midas) and ask what they do with their stuff.. they might just take it from you for free or for a small fee

you can try your local vato zone

Call me an a-hole but I just dump it in the garbage. I can't stand going to Auto Zone even to get oil and the guys there probably don't even realize I can dump used fluids there. The only other place I can go to is the county recycling center and w/ $4/gal gas, I rather put it in the garbage.

Not to be a prick but if everyone had that mentality this world would be an even bigger shithole.

Go to NJ. The entire Medowlands is a landfill, things can't get worse. However, if you think about it, considering the strict standards that landfills have to operate w/, it really doesn't matter what you throw in the garbage since it can't pollute the environment. Landfills have to have a containment method to prevent any seepage (which consists of layers upon layers of plastic films, gravel, and sand) so if I throw oil out, it's going to stay in the landfill, and not the surrounding environment. Gone are the days were watching what you threw out mattered since it use to be the ocean was our landfill. I'm not saying I'm right for doing what I do but I'm not going to go out of my way so that the EPA is happy.

suposed to go to the dump or auto zone or somethin. i also hide it in my garbage bags. yea i know its not right but they charge you a pretty penny to take your bio waste for you here.

I hear you guys out dumping it in the garbage, but i just have the slightest feeling that im the guy that is going to caught and punished. Thats just my luck i guess, id rather play it safe. Im asking this because i am some kind of environmental freak, i just wanna keep myself out of trouble.

Thanks guys

I just put it in gallon jugs and after they get full and i have 3 or 4 I take them to advanced or autozone and dump it into there recycle tub. Throwing it in the trash is fucked up.
