Gears, sacrafice top end speed?

I just bought a set of FRPP 3.73 gears and was wondering how it will affect the top speed. I talked to some people and they say that you will top out at 130 with the gears. Then others tell me that it will be the same. Is it true that the gears alone will shed off 3 tenths of a second off your quarter mile? Regardless what my top end speed is going to be they are going in Monday. Also how do you place your mods in the pm at the bottom? Thanks for the help.

yuo will lose some top end. but with 3.73's its not like you wont be able to still do 150. cause trust me you will be able to.

It all depends on the set up, but with 3.73's you'll be okay! I have 3.73's on my 5-speed and don't have a problem getting to 150 MPH! ;) ...although I never go that fast!, you will however need to recalibrate you speed! As for as placing your mods at the bottom of your post! Go go user CP and go to edit signature and enter it there! :)

If wind is not a factor, gears limit your top end. The more gear, the more you loose at the top end. A car with 3.27's can hit a higher speed than a car with 4.10's. BUT (note the big disclaimer) it depends what is limiting the top end speed. The reason why those that have gears claim to not see a change in their top end has to do with the power band.

A car with 4.10's in 5th gear at 130 mph is higher in the power band than a car with 3.27's at the same speed so it can over-come wind resistance better as it id making more power.

Keep in mind, a Mustang's top speed with any gear ratio is the point at which the motor can not over come wind resistance, not that the motor has hit redline in 5th and simply can't go faster. Unless, of course, you have some crazy-ass gear ratio like 6.10's or somethinhg like that.

ding ding ding, that's right
The common misconception with gears is that it reduces "topend" and most people think of that as the car being slower. The car will actually accelerate faster until it redlines out, which won't be a problem with 3.73s unless you're making some SERIOUS power.

Yea, it will if anything, raise it because fifth gear will actually be useful. I think the top end in a car with 3.27s is over like 200 mph but with wind resistance, its not able to. The 3.73 gear will keep you in the powerband in fifth gear.

Im going with 4.10 bwahahaha

Stangdude27 12-08-2004 11:31 AM

I have the FFRP 3.73's and I haven't seen anything wrong with them yet. Matter of fact the gears don't whine at all.

Marios40thPony 12-08-2004 11:43 AM

What year is your car??? If you have a mid 01+ (3650) then your final drive is .62, and like me even with 4:10's I'm only pushing 2300 at 70mph. I really don't get any worst gas mileage. The difference between 3:90's and 4:10's isn't that much, so if I were you I'd go with the 4:10's, so you can't say in the future that you wish you would of.

I agre...I was worried about the gas too but after seeing everyone regreting that they didn't do 4.10's thr first time, I went for the 4.10's...my gas is a little worse if I'm speeding all over the place but regular driving isn't affected very much at all...GO WITH THE 4.10'S...Trust Me!

truth, i still get over 20mpg on the highway with mine.

96juicedgt 08-01-2005 12:55 PM

I have 3.73's in my 95GT 5spd and my 96GT auto and they aren't bad on gas nor do they hurt my top end speed enough to notice...you can still hit 150 easily trust me! My uncle did 4.10's on his 99 Cobra and he loves them...i wish i had went with the 4.10 to be honest!
