Light knocking noise coming from under the hood.. HELP!

Alright, I've looked around and found a few threads that were similar, but didn't get too much from them.

When my car is idling, i can hear a knocking noise coming from what sounds like under the hood, just beyond the center of the dashboard. Not sure if that's where it is exactly, but it sounds like it. So, it knocks, but when I push the clutch in, it stops. Can't tell if it knocks while I'm driving. What is it??? Help!

Sounds like something in the clutch, pressure plate or throw out bearing. throw out bearing being the most likely.

Tuff nailed it right on the head. I'm having the same ****ing problem... Just got my clutch/flywheel replaced tuesday (picked it up last night) and they fucked up the throw out bearing... Worst part is, I was going to use tomorrow to go to ford to quote me on a new t-3650, or synchronizer replacement (my current transmission only has 10,000 miles (MY LAST ONE HAD THE SAME FREAKING PROBLEM),it's now f*cking up...I have 37k miles, so I HOPE they'll say the transmissions still under warranty)... Now I've gotta go to milstead auto and make them fix my **cking BRAND NEW CLUTCH! I didn't pay 1400 dollars to get f**ked up the ass!

On top of this, I have no ride home. my parents went out of town tonight so I'm even more royally f*cked. My life f*cking RULES!

About how much would the TOB run me if it turns out that's what it is?

The TOB itself is only about $30 from Randy here in parts, but the main cost comes from labor because the tranny has to be removed. If it is almost time for a new clutch, now is the time to consider it since the tranny will already be down.

It's coming from just beyond the very center of the dash (like where the a/c vents are), but under the hood. I don't even know where the TOB is located. Also, slight tapping/knocking noise that sounds like it's coming from the steering column area when I brake. Just time for new brakes or something more?

As you said in the first post, the noise goes away when you press the clutch pedal down. That is the classic sign of a TOB going bad. It would have to be something from the flywheel back for this to be the case. What happens is, when you press the clutch pedal, you put tension on the bearing, but when idling in neutral, it is free spinning, generating noise.

The bearing itself is inside the bellhousing on the shiftfork and input shaft sleeve (for a lack of better word). The transmission must be pulled to replace the bearing, hence my saying that the cost is mostly labor because of that. If you can do it yourself, you will be much better off.
