Is this a problem or no?

I have a slight kind of ticking sound when I press the accelerator. It is nothing to loud or bothersome. IT sounds kind of like... I don't even know how to explain it, like if my car had spokes like a bike someone put a playing card there. Like a fast "tit tit tit tit tit" sound. Which goes faster as I accelerate more. But I take my foot off the sound stops. And my car seems to be getting a little less torque than i think it should.

tsumi88 03-31-2008 10:10 AM

sounds like it could be a small exhaust leak.... ive one on my exhaust manifold.... really annoying sound

Crimsonred02 03-31-2008 10:24 AM

Hmmm great lol. I wanted to switch out and buy an H pipe and dual exhaust. What a great excuse!

01FR500 03-31-2008 10:48 AM

It could be on the passenger's side exhaust manifold, always been a problem with the sixxers. water drips on it from the A/C. Some people use seafoam to help find exhaust leaks.

Crimsonred02 03-31-2008 11:00 AM

What would I have to do to fix that? How much should i be looking to spend on a fix? I felt like I had seen a torque or HP drop since I started hearing it, I would assume a leak in the exhaust would cause that.

Steeda97 03-31-2008 11:07 AM

I'm having that ticking sound now. It is rather annoying. Check your plugs, could be bad fuel injector, coil pack, or wire, or something around that range. Turn your car on and play with the plugs a little bit and see if you can stop the ticking momentarily.

Could be a bunch of things though.

tsumi88 03-31-2008 11:26 AM

heh, i was wondering why the muffler guys said the crack was from water.... now i know
too bad i have to get shorties... dam vert!!!! you and your extra support

Dream 03-31-2008 12:08 PM

piston slap? or is it nowhere even near the engine...?

Crimsonred02 03-31-2008 12:14 PM

From inside it sounds like it is coming from behind the radio, so my guess is it is coming from somewhere under the hood.

tsumi88 03-31-2008 12:43 PM

can you hear it better if your window is down, maybe even open your door, lean out and kinda look under your car.... i also hear mine more when the engine is cold. I can really hear it if im in a drive through, reflects the sound right into my head.
does this sound like your situation?

01FR500 03-31-2008 01:23 PM

If it is a cracked exhaust manifold (make sure before you try to fix it it), then you'll either have to but a new one or possibly have it welded. I don't know how much a stock replacement header costs or how much to have it welded costs.

Dream 03-31-2008 03:19 PM

check ur flanges where ur cats meet ur piping to the muffler and all your others. if it sounds that close to u it shouldnt b engine problems.....

Crimsonred02 04-02-2008 08:28 AM

Thanks for all the advice guys. I have Fridays off so I am going to take it into the garage I usually go to have work done on my car. They always check shit out for me for free and do work for a really really good price. I will have him check my exhaust and go from there.

Crimsonred02 04-09-2008 11:01 AM

I am taking my car in this Friday to an exhaust shop to have it looked at. Does anyone have any idea what I should be looking to spend on a fix if it does happen to be an exhaust leak? In the places it could be? How much if it is in the muffler... cat... pipe... manifold etc. Alos I figure since he is already working on it I will ask how much it would be to put an H pipe and catbacks and split it to dual exhaust, how much should I be looking to spend on that?

tsumi88 04-09-2008 11:29 AM

i got a quote for installing headers on mine.... like 800.... probably better off bringing in your own bbk longtubes and having them do it that way. if it is anywhere but your mani, your probably looking @ 50-100 for a "fix"

i think it might be slightly more then that. 150 would be the max though.
cats normally go for little less then 200 so if they make u get a completly new cat then u might have to be paying a bit more then uve expected. u should b ok though.

Crimsonred02 04-09-2008 11:57 AM

God I don't know if I wanna split it to dual or not. Sure it will sound better, but I think I'd rather put that money aside and save it for a nicer Mustang rather than just upgrade this. So you say I should be looking 50-100 for anything but the mani to fix what I have on now stock? Thanks for the input!

Dream 04-09-2008 12:04 PM

ide say do the split. for the price it ends up being, its not much more of a difference if u have to get it all taken appart anyways.

Crimsonred02 04-09-2008 12:06 PM

yeah if the damage to my exhaust now is a lot I will split it to dual. But if fixing what I have is only $100-ish and splitting would be around $1000 I wouldn't do it.

cre8787 04-09-2008 12:08 PM

When was the last time you changed you oil? My guess is a spun rod bearing. This happens on low oil for a long period of time. I've had this happen to me and a few people i know. It started tapping very quietly in some RPM ranges. As time went on it got louder and louder and would do it constantly. also, It would tick during idle. Do an oil change ASAP, if there is metal in the pan or in the oil, you might be looking for a new motor.

well put

tsumi88 04-09-2008 12:14 PM

don't spun bearings give a chatter or slight dinging noise???

cre8787 04-09-2008 12:23 PM

Mine didnt. Its an awful noise that i will never forget. Sounds exactly like what he described. "Ticking" through the RPMs and getting louder and faster as RPMs climb.

tsumi88 04-09-2008 12:25 PM

oh DAM, that would suck!!!!!!!!!
one of my buddies supras spun a bearing, sounded almost like a chattering throw out bearing.....
hope you dont have a goofed bearing crimsonred.... talk about killin a buzz! lol

cre8787 04-09-2008 12:25 PM

Sorry, yes, "chatter" could be one way of describing the noise a spun bearing makes.

tsumi88 04-09-2008 12:30 PM

ahh, well, he put ticking, which is what i hear and have the "v6 ac compressor water vs exhaust manifold" issue as well.... thats y we were all thinking exhaust mani....
i still hope that is it

cre8787 04-09-2008 12:33 PM

Hopefully thats it. Its hard to diag a car if you cant hear the noise though. I'm just preparing him for the worst case senario. Like they said above though, it could be a hundred different things.

tsumi88 04-09-2008 12:35 PM

very true. i love the whole "my car is making X noise; what is wrong?"
lol
its always good to know what it could be though.
let us know as soon as you find out what it is.
..... have you taken it to a muffler shop so they can take a look; generally, they can spot a leak fast.

Crimsonred02 04-09-2008 12:37 PM

I am 99% sure it is exhaust. You can hear it when you stand outside my car, the exhaust sounds louder. I severely doubt it is the oil. I haven't even had the car a month and the oil was perfectly fine when I bought it.

herndy_1 04-19-2008 11:33 PM

I have the exact same ticking noise. It's annoying. An exhaust leak near the manifold/cats could also cause you to feel some extra heat around your feet.

Something you might want to try for the lack of torque/sluggish acceleration is a new fuel filter if you haven't in the past 30k.
