311 Ring gear!!!!!!!

Is it just me or is this surprising? Why 311, are they trying to increase top speed?

zigzagg321 10-20-2007 07:38 PM

what has a 3.11? who's they? must be new...im not up on it.

machnjo 10-20-2007 07:51 PM

I image he has a automatic tranny. My '02 GT had 3.11 gears as well, 5 spd GTs had 3.27. Thats why one of the first upgrades I did to it was 4.10s. Not exactly sure why, but I think they did that because automatics aren't as rugged as the 5 spd and a helluva lot more expensive to repair/replace if it goes out.

no... it's not for top speed. It's usually a choice intended to get their CAFE mileage average up a point or two. It's all about the fuel economy. If 3.11 over 3.27's gets them that extra mile per gallon... that's all they care about.

that would have NO get up and go would it?

Grabber07GT 10-21-2007 07:49 PM

It is a five speed manual. I ran the vin and got the print out from the dealer to make sure of the rear end. It is my first 4.6 stang so I just assumed they were slower to rev but then I got to thinking it has to be the rear end. I ran right with an 04 Mach 1 today. He had his cats out completely and CAI with a predator tuner but never Dyno tuned it. He said he had 3.73's on his but if that is the case I would have expected him to edge me out, we were neck to neck up to 110 when we called it.

Hum....an 07 GT and an Mach 1 have about the same power rating, and about the same 1/4 mile times stock. The 4.10's should have helped him out of the hole, but al lot of people show slower times with 4.10's until they have had some practise. A car with 3.11's will be easier to drive and have more on the top-end. I did not realize anyone was putting 3.11's in a Mustang.

mpt_1962 10-22-2007 08:05 AM

I've never heard of that myself. I thoguht they would have stuck with the 3.27

Grabber07GT 10-22-2007 05:14 PM

I bought an auctioned 93 trooper stang back in 96 and it had 3.27's I believe. I had never heard of 3.11 gears at all when I pulled the sheet from the dealer. It is long winded. I ran a friend of mine (just for kicks) in his 06 c6 z51 vette from about mid way through second gear. I lost of course but for the difference in money spent I was not too upset. Can you believe he got rid of of an 03 Cobra tweeked to push 441 to the wheels for a freakin vette?

That is because Vette owners have small dicks.

that or they dont have the know how to mod a vehicle and just buy one thats fast from the factory, which is toooo much money to spend on a car for the hp they have stock.

Grabber07GT 10-23-2007 05:13 PM

LOL that is hilarious!!!!! Actually the poor fella has OCD pretty bad so he sells a car after he feels it has too many minute scratches or the tiniest stain. It is his second vette ( had an 02 z06) but he always comes back to the stang. I could see it in his eyes when he drove mine.

THe 05-06 s197's auto come with 3:31 and the 5 speed comes with 3:55's

r3dn3ck 11-18-2007 08:34 AM

It's all about gas mileage. Ford has a CAFE standard to adhere to. 3.31's on an auto make it get the same basic mileage as a 3.55 geared manual. If not, Ford would stick 3.55's in auto cars so they don't have to make 2 rear ends.
