Another Gears Thread

Okay, i know theres about a million threads on this, but i'm still undecided.

What would be better for me? I'm a city driver, rarely highway and my mustang IS my daily driver. I want something to give me a little more confidence against LS1's and such. I drive an automatic. MPG does come into effect as its pretty expensive around here.

Few questions:
1) 3.73 or 4.10?
2) What brand?
3) Estimate on price after everything (tune, install etc)

Thanks!

you wanna mess with Ls1's??...4.10's...especially since you have an Auto.

Ford Racing makes some mighty fine gear sets.

depends on where you go for the install price. 300-600 dollars is the min/max range I have seen.

not to be an ass, but your about 80rwhp and tq short of "messing" with stock LS1's. Go with 4:10's and it will for sure help in those short races stop light to stop light.

Well, my friend has a pretty fast LS1. Its a 2000 z28, with 3.73 gears, intake, exhaust etc. We raced a pretty good distance, stop light to stop light, i owned him off the launch but he ate me in third gear. I kept up, though.

What do you think would be total price? Around 1,000?

hehe...yeah that's so true...Damn Ls1's...haha good thing they are freakishly ugly or I'd be driving a GM product.

yep, that sounds about right....3rd gear is a Mutha in LS1's.

The cost will depend on where you live....here in Cali it's damn hard to find anyone that does anything for less than $80-100 an hour so it can be spendy, however i've heard of people around the country getting their gears installed for $300....that doesn't include the cost of parts.

same with me

4.10s i think will give you better gas mileage in city driving...

spike_africa 07-02-2007 12:06 PM

4.10s for sure ona mostly city car they are the way to go. And dont worry you can mess with them i have beaten a good number of ls1 when i only had drag radials, intake, and mufflers. Being a good driver helps alot.

"while yer in there"

your looking about 1,000 for part + install. Friend got his jeep 4.88 gears and it cost him a little bit over a 1,000 dollars.

v6'stang 07-02-2007 07:16 PM

i think it cost around 860 for my 3.73's, bearing kit, gear oil, t-lok, and install.

spike_africa 07-02-2007 09:59 PM

with 56k i wouldn't bother the bearings are good I'm sure. how many mustangs can you think of with 120K+ on stock rears, i can think of alot. get the basic install kit you will be fine. But i guess if it bothers you alot then do it i mean shit its your car.

Cheddarbob 07-03-2007 07:15 AM

how many miles would you say that you should put the new bearing kit on?

spike_africa 07-03-2007 08:00 AM

Everyone feels differently im sure about it, me i wouldnt bother unless it has 90k or more. But i mean do whatever you feel like there is nothing wrong doing it early i just would rather keep the money then replace bearings.
