Dusty Plugs
 

I pulled one of my plugs. Been getting some ping on my performance tune, so I am running on my 89 octane tune for the time being. Dam difference between PA and WI fuel is giving me grief.

My plugs have always looked great....no issues. I wanted to see if they had signs of detonation....which they did not.

However, the one I pulled was covered completely in a light tan dust....I mean everything. Not heavy, but very noticeable. It cleaned off and they look fine.

Anyone know if octane boost can cause this? I just ran some boost with MMT on the last tank. It cured the ping, but I don't want to use the stuff.

I am getting it re-tuned.

did it have small specks on it? if so that is detonation.

You most-likely are getting detonation from too warm of a plug. What plugs are you using, and what are they gapped at? If you are using NGKs, switch over to Autolites. Whats your heat range from stock? Are you going down two heat ranges? Try grabbin a set of Autolite AR94s and gap em at like .036-.038. Its two steps colder.

You are running stock boost levels im assuming at 390rwhp with an intercooled setup..

I would also suction out your chamber. DO NOT use an air hose to blow it out.

i read around that octane boost can make your plugs orange. a lot of guys with mustangs in germany run octane booster and their plugs are a orangeish color... thats just a consensus i got from them. re-tune sounds like a good idea.

Nope. First thing I looked for.

I doubt it. I run 103's. If you go by the threads, only about 1 and a half were discolored which means my heat range is a little too cool if anything. They are gapped at .035 I believe.

I really think it is MMT deposits from the oactane boost.

wow you plugs look like that, cant say in all my experience i have ever seen a red plug like that.

yup....just like that, just not as thick. Looks like it burns-off if you leave them alone.

ok thats more beliveable, you know fuel cleaners, octane boosters etc.. will color your plug so if you have been doing that to your car then there is your answer.
