? about header install
would i be able to do a header install by myself in my garage with a jack and some jack stands? i have some ok mechanical experience i went to votech for a year and worked on cars and i have done all my installations so far
(x-pipe, cat back, intake, t-body, plenum, short shifter) all easy installs exhaust was the hardest but like what is involved in installing headers what do i have to move to take out stock and install new headers? and how long do you think it would take? thanks max |
I do everything in my garage with jack stands, hand tools, and by myself. Including dropping the tranny, without a tranny jack. Just look at the write up on my site.

nice, but i dont think everyone here has three HD floor jacks.

You only need 1 jack.
|
too things, how are you going to hold the engine up and let the k-member down slowly with only one jack? you need two to pull off properly and safely. the more important is the latter of the two.
|
You only need one jack to hold the engine up. The only thing that needs to be lowered down is the k member, a arms, and steering knuckles. Dont lower it with the rotors, springs, steering rack and struts still on it.
Use a couple of boxes, a tire, or somthing similar to lay the k member onto. I used two recycling bins. Or you could have a buddy help you lower it to the ground. Ive done this install well over 10 times. I also drop my tranny with only a jack, stand, and by myself. Anything can be done with simple tools if you know what you're doing. |
I didn't use a jack hardly at all. I ended up using an engine suppose which was holding the engine from above. That way i didn't have to worry about having a jack in the way while trying to lower the k-member. k-member itself doens't weigh too much me and a buddy lifted it up into place no problem. If you are willing to have your car down for a day or so depending if you run into any problems it is defenentaly doable on the garage floor.

word.. we did it the harder way around, I dont remember why, I think we were already pretty frustrated from trying to install them with the k-member sitll in, lol.
|
i had a three day weekend to do it so i made sure that when i started to get frustrated that I'd walk away and take a break before I messed soemthing up. Ended up putting about 7 hours into it total throughout a few days. only problem not is I didn't do a clutch then and I am rethinking that decision.
