3.55, 3.73, 4.10 Gears?
 

How much does changing the gears affect gas mileage in the car? the stock on a 96 cobra is 3.27. i get like 21 to 23 aroung town and 28 if only on highway. any one know

When I put my 3.73's I didn't really seem to see a difference in MPG. Maybe two or three less but when you think about the gains the gas milage dosn't make a difference.

The 3.73 are good if you do alot of highway driving......If you drive in the city or on rural roads go with the 4.10s......

Whats a few mpg when were out there beating up chevys and rice burners?

Thanks i can live with 3 to 4 mpg less. She's been good to me on gas since i got her. i had (dare i say) a camaro z but it had a tree fall on it so i bought this one bout 3.5 years ago.

If you have a cobra, get at least 4.10's. They love to rev, as you know, and the min gear should be a 4.10. I wish I had put them in my car instead of 3.73s, just like everyone said I would, but oh well. I like them anyways. Get the 4.10's

After the installation of 4.10's what kind of changes need to made to the calibration of the gauges?...I don't have a programmer or anything and I heard somewhere that the speedometer would need to be recalibrated. :sign5:

You would need a chip or programer to change the speedo for the gears. Otherwise your mph is going to be off and you probably won't get good top end. If I am wrong please someone correct me, I'm not wize in this matter.

I guess I don't understand how it works...how do you know that the speedo is right or is it just something you need to do to understand...

Thats if your car,like mine a 2004GT it has a top speed lemiter. but the diablo has a way to turn it off.

I've been looking into the different gears a little more...I do about 50-75 miles a day on the freeway around 75 mph. In fifth, what do the RPMs stay at? I want gears that will give a lot more pull on the track as well as the freeway but I do drive a lot and do not want to stress the engine...I understand that higher rpms on 4.10 gears are a lot different than high rpms on stock gears because of the way that it tranfers the torque...I have 25,000 miles on my car and want the best possible performance from the gears without stressing the engine (too much) :tongue3:

First off, if you have a diablo predator, or any other kind of flash tuner, there is a section in it to change the gear size. This will correct your speedo.

Second, many here will have a debate on which gears to get if you are highway driving. W/ 4.10 you are looking at 70mph 2500-3000rpm.

Some will say this is fine, go with the 4.10, others will say no, too high too much stress on the engine go with 3.73.

Best thing to do is get 3.90 gears, and you will be fine.

If you can drive a mustang with 4.10 and 3.73 gears so you see what if feels like and what you like, take it on the highway so that you can see the rpms.

I think I will get the 3.90 gears...I don't want to put stress on the engine and it's not like I race all the time...recent tickets slow me down! I figure I'll still get great pull with the 3.90 gears. Do you know if the shops that install the gears usually recal the speedo...I don't have a programmer.

with 3.90's do you need a stall converter? also what the heck is a stall converter? some one tried to explain it to me and i just got confused. i think mainly cuz the guy explaining it to me was confused also.

theres only really one thing your car can use... and thats a SPEEDCAL... usually around a $100 bucks and they install it and it takes care of your speedo... cant use a speedo gear or programmer i dont think

You don't have to get a higher stall converter with a gear change. It will knock 4-5 tenth's off your 1/4 mile time though. If you get 3.90's to 4.10's and a 3200 -3500 stall speed converter you will need drag radials to hook up.
