Gear Problem...

sorry gents for the another gear thread but ive had my 4.10s in my auto for about a month now,i know most people say that if gears were installed properly there is no break-in period but i took it easy for about 2wks and then like 2wks ago i went to the track and tried em out, improvement for sure, but 2 days ago i was driving to school and i heard a humming sound coming from the rear of the car,so i let off the accelerator pedal and it stopped i stepped on it again and it once again that humming noise...is that the gears whining?...and its only and 45-50mph (yes,i drive like a grandma,LOL)...should i worry, and take it back to the installer? on a side note i recieved my custom tune from Justin at VMP Tuning and my car feels like a different monster, shifts are much firmer,etc...but if yall could gimme some advice it is much appreciated..thanks

It sounds to me like your gears are making noise. Start with a fluid check and change. If you want you can even pull the rear cover and check the gears for any obvious damage. In any case, your installer needs to make it right. Sounds to me like they were set up out of spec.

You may also have buckled the crush sleeve a bit which would cause some noise. I always have a solid crush sleeve put in and have the preload set to factory spec. It guarantees that something will break if there's a problem but it keeps me from risking having the sleeve crush and throw all the clearances out of whack if I decide to do a hard launch. Your wrench can advise you on using that type of part. It's not always a good idea.

Your gears are whining for sure..bad install i'd say...take it back to get them done right..

Mine does the same thing at the same speeds. It is not very loud, but I still can hear kind of a high pitch whine when in those gears. Its only when on the gas and in 4th or 5th gear. It probably has to do with the gear ratio in the tranny and the 4.10s in the year. Those two together probably make the sound more noticeble when in an overdrive gear. I wouldn't worry about it. 4.10's are a steep gear. Any car with such straight cut gears is going to make more noise. I have had mine in for 4 months and havent had any problems. The guy who installed them specializes in rear ends, so I am not worried.

I have the same problem with the same gears at the same speeds. I've just gotten used to it.

4.10s in an auto. that's exactly the way I want to go, but I have a few questions for the auto guys.

1) Does it now shift at a different MPH?
2) Does the transmission now hunt for the right gear?
3) What's your rpms at 65 mph? (I've done the calculators, I want the real deal)
4) Is 1st totally worthless as far as romping on it due to the torque?
5) What does it take to get an auto with 4.10s to hook on the street?
