tranny shimmer

Ive got a 96 Gt auto.... its got about 130K on its and has run great, still does but im starting to think that i might be running into some tranny issues.... when at a stop... or from a cold crank sometimes the car will (while in park) shake.....tremble shimmer whatever you want to call it....but as soon as I put it in gear and drive or get the tranny warmed up it wont do it anymore. While driving...when I accelerate from a stop there is a "shimmer" for just a few seconds from the stop then it drives smooth from there on....you can really feel it when pulling up a hill like my driveway .....maybe the driveshaft...dunno any ideas?

get thee to a tranny shop. and I don't mean transvestite world.

Icefreezen 10-25-2006 12:41 PM

Torque converter...get it to a shop asap its gonna get worse and dont accelerate fast

Justin 10-25-2006 02:55 PM

didnt think about the torque converter.. is that common? well im going to the shop tomorrow and gettinng a tranny flush so i guess ill have to tell them about that.......

Shimmers are usually caused by low fluid. If its mechanical then its the converter

And or crap in the transmission....a flush may fix it.

If its the tranny then it is a fluid problem...

I bet its not the tranny though...

It could be a timing issue... pull one of the plugs and see what it looks like to make sure it is running the corrct Air/Fuel ratio...

a lean running car usually shakes at certain RPM ranges.

Could also be the harmonic balence... i highly doubt that though...

Ive been in cars that shook and the owners would insist that its the tranny... til I pull one of the plugs and show them ash on the plug...

If the plug looks fine then you are probably headed the right direction... but if its plugs... then plugs are cheaper then tranny stuff

thanks man, but I dont think that its the plugs... I just went through the whole ignition and timing thing a few months ago so I have a new pair of FRP wires and plugs so id hope it wasnt that.... but im pretty confident that its coming from the tranny or the torque converter now that i was told about it....who knows.. getting the flush and all that tomorrow...we will just have to find out

You know when its with your tranny when it's a making vibrations from the tranny area and not the motor you cant miss it on these autos. Is your tranny slipping or anything? Over reving before it shifts? Unusual shift points? The shimmy your talking about is called tranny shudder tell your guy thats doing the tranny to flush everything lines and all and tell him to put mercon V in it. If that soles it good if not than i'm 90% sure its the converter

Justin 10-26-2006 09:16 AM

well we will see this after noon took it to the shop and they are going to fluch it.... made sure it was a good flush he said they use around 16 quarts for the wnole thing and he will put in the mercon V.....

I'd still check the plugs

far easier and cheaper then the tranny... why spend alot of money when it could have cost you 50 bucks?

I had somewhat of a similiar issue a few months back.

When I would reverse and then put it into drive, there would be about a 2-3 second pause before it would jerk forward and go. Also would "shudder" for a few seconds before warmed up. Sometimes would get so bad that when stopped at a stop light and I let go up the brake, it would sit there for a full second or two and then jerk forward and drive. My tranny O/D light would come on and blink for about a minute.

After researching, the O/D light was throwing a tranny code. Turns out that my B&M Tranny cooler had a small leak. Tighten that up, filled her back up with tranny fluid, and haven't had a problem since. Simple fix for me, hopefully the same for you.

Its not the plugs ... you would understand this if you had a auto and th edifference between leaning out and a tranny shudder

yeh... I'm not a autotranny guy... When a lean running car shakes its hard to tell where the shake comes from... most people think it came from the tranny...

And in some cases thats true but the shudder is when he accelerates. If it were the plugs it would be rough all the time even at idle.

true... depending on how lean or not it runs... it could be shaking but almost unnoticiable...

lol... I aint tryin to start an arguement... just wanna make sure all bases are covered...

the final

well got it back just a few ago.... and the "shimmer" os gone! everyone was close but it turened out to be a line that was completely disconeccted.... it was causing an air pressure leak to the enigne causing it to run lean....apparently all that had to be done was reconnect it and that was it... the flush feels great but I feel a MILD shake still from the tranny....im maybe im imagining things but i dont think so
