98 4.6 2V compared to a 99 4.6 2V?
 

Is there any difference in the motors between these 2 years besides just the way the intake manifold bolts up? Is the 98 a non PI head engine?

the 96-98 2v 4.6's all are non PI head's and intake but have a higher compression shortblock, But the heads have a larger CC and thus the actul compression is about the same. This is why when you add 99-04 GT heads the cc in the heads is smaller and the compression goes up on 96-98 GT's.

the 99-04 Gt's have better flowing heads,intakes,better suited for them cam profiles.

The non-PIs are rated at 215hp and PIs are rated at 260 so its a substantial difference.

That's what I thought, I am just trying to figure out what is going on with my car. IT's in the shop now, and my mechanic (grandfather-in-law) called me and told me that the PI intake he got (for a 99-04) wouldn't fit so he ordered one for a 96-98 and it fits? WTF? I knew when I bought my car it wasn't the origingal engine in it, but why the hell would someone put a 98 block in it?

Dont know if this is the big difference or not, but mine does have the coil packs, and all the pictures I have been looking at of 96-98 engines all have plug wires?

um... well... the Oil fill cap is on the wrong side for a 99+...

If you do have a 98 Non PI, 98 was rated at 225HP-Ford did some light port work on the exhaust side of the heads, then the original was probably trashed and he found a good deal on a 98 motor. If you take the intake off and look at the intake ports or heads and they are round, it's non pi, if it looks like an irregular square looking ports, its PI.

Also if he kept the original wiring then he can use COP's. like me but reverse, i have a 2003 5.4, it had COP's but i used my coil packs and plug wires cause i kept the original wiring harness. i could have swapped it out to use the COP's but to me it wasn't worth it. But if that's a 98 intake, it shouldn't have provisions for the COP's to bolt down.

Also the 98 and down had two temp sensors on the intake, the left one (looking at the motor from the front) is for your interior gauge, the right one is for the computer. I can only see one on the left on your car, like the 99 and up intakes. So if he put a 98 motor in it, only used one sensor, then either your gauge doesn't work, or your computer isn't reading the coolant temp. Their are provisions in our heads that will take a coolant temp sensor, so i wonder if he did that? I have a new FRPP intake, so it had 2 for me,you had to plug the other one if you didn't need it, and it's a PI intake, but i still use the sensor in the head for the computer, more accurate reading.

Also i see the newer style alt and alt braket, i'm trying to think that the 99 and up bracket didn't work on the 98 and down intakes, i remember having one and really think it can't.

and yeah, i beleive the valve covers changed, where the oil cap is on the passenger side, not sure if it was 99 or later when they did that, but 98 and down is on the driver side.

If you can remember if the head/intake ports were round or more squarish, that would tell you the answer.

I just got off the phone with my wife's grandfather, it does have the NPI heads (:flameON: ) and some ****ing way the guy that had it before me, had a 99-04 intake on it? He (my grandfather-in-law) said there was a **** load of silicone and the gaskets were cut to make it work.....

So as of now, a lot of plans I had for my car are on hold and I am saying **** modding this engine and I am saving up for a MPH (VT) engine!!!!

That does suck but the VT engine will be sweet.

He might have burned the valves up and got some cheap NPI heads, or he took the PI heads off and sold them and had some NPI laying around and put those on. That's totally F'd up. So the engine is 99 and up, but the heads were just 98 and below right? damn.

Yep, and it pisses me the **** off! It sucks too, because there was absolutly no way to tell, and if my current intake wouldn't have cracked I never would have known it (atleast, until I got it dynoed and it came up with about 200rwhp)!

It's my first V8 that wasn't in a SUV! lol, that's how!

But, I did find out it's just the heads, the block and all is the original 99, but the guy that had it before me focked up the heads and got cheap and replaced them with non PI and then traded the car in!

It's really ****ed up too, because before I bought the car I called and talked to him, he told me he blew it up and replaced the heads and intake and all, he just "forgot" to mention that he got cheap and replaced them with non PI.......****er!

Ah well, I'm going home now to drink a **** load of beer to reduce my anger (atleast for today)...

I had a buddy who had an 03 GT. He was turning it into a cobra, had the body kit, the 4v 4.6l, then he decided to buy a real cobra so he traded it in.
The dealership was asking why he said it was a cobra when the VIN said GT. He said "i dunno, look uinder the hood, there is the 4v V8, look at the body. its a cobra".
So the dealership have him trade-in value of a cobra, when it was actually a GT with a bodykit and a 4v engine swap.

Wow, that would suck to have a Fobra and think you have a real Cobra. I guess as long as you don't know and someone already went through the hassle to make it a clone. But a lie still sucks.

Ouch! Some poor bastard is going to take it to a car show or something and Cobra guys are going to start really looking at the car and break the news to him.....suspension (different)....guages (different)...interior (different) and the list goes on! ha ha....that sucks man, I know your buddy probably got a lot more money on the trade-in, but it sucks he did that.

I'm as we all know putting a 00 5.4L in my car and it's certainly not stock on suspension or brakes, so I guess my 03gt with a 00' expedition motor and a 98 cobra axle, baer brakes would be a 9800 Expebra R' then huh... hahaha

someone is either going to get a really expensive GT or a really cheap Fobra.

Well this guy put a lot of work turning it into a cobra. doesent have the IRS, had the whole body kit, emblems, seats, gauges, 4v 4.6lV8, Cobra rims, etc.

He still had the stock GT brakes. a lot of the suspension was stock... it was enough to fool a ford dealership though.

all in all, i'd totally be stoked to have it if i knew where it was and could get a good price, however, i'd re-badge it back as a GT cause it still aint a cobra.
