Tranny Swap Issues

Ok so a buddy of mine just got a new tranny for his 99 GT and he said that i could have his old T5 for pretty cheap. Since my snycros are all effed up on my car I figure Id take him up on his offer. But before I do I just wanted to clear up a few things.

First off it will fit right?.. Do I have to change the bell housing? and lastly am i going to run into any wiring problems because im going from a t45 to a t5?

Oh and is there anything else I need?

Not sure about it bolting up or not, you'll have to look at your bolt config and the bolt config on the T-5.
The wiring shouldn't be different, just the speed sensor and back up light sensor.

IIRC the 99-mid01 GT's had T-45's of about the same spec as yours. The bell housings are common to all modular motors so that's not a worry.

The tail shaft housing may be different and may need to be swapped in order to fit the crossmember but I can't be certain.

also i think that the 96-98 t-5/t45's have mechanical speedometers and the 99 and up have electrical

O well i guess ill just wait for a nice t45 to show up on ebay.

Yeah, the 99 and up are electrical and 98 down mechanical speedos. I put a 99 Cobra T-45 on my car and had to modify the crossmember, just had to turn the slots into L shape slots to make it work, and i had to get the speedcal to make the MPH read right.

Ebay has a real good source of T-45's, if you can, try to get one from a Cobra, their internals were made stronger than a GT's T-45

yea ive been lookin... im thinkin about maybe buying a rebuild kit for my t45. They go for around 200$ but im not sure how much it would cost to get someone to put it in for me? unless i could do it myself but ive never done any tranny work before...

Depends on where you go, i've seen it run 500 bones for someone to do a rebuild kit, and that's to have parts and 1000 bones if you didn't supply the parts. but places vary. A manual will be alot easier than a auto but you still have to be careful and know what your doing with the tranny to work on it.
2 things i don't mess with and it's rear end gears and trannys. i'll tear a motor down and back up but not trannys

I<3MySnAke 08-23-2006 03:19 PM

so 500$ total if i supply the parts?... or 500 on top of the cost of the kit?... either way thts not too bad considering i only got 57K on my tranny and most of the ones on ebay are closer to 70K miles and around 800$ plus shipping

Saleen S330 08-23-2006 04:44 PM

You would have to check cause it varies, but 500 plus whatever the kit cost.
I somehow snagged my 99 Cobra T45 on ebay for 400 shipped, almost no miles on it, and when it came it looked like it had 0 miles on it, nice and clean and brand new looking, so those sweet deals come along here and there.

yea ill definitly keep my eye out. thanks for the help
