Gear change

Does anyone know where I can get a step by step instruction on how to change rear end gears? Would be the first time for me, and I'd like to do it myself. I know this will take a ton of help, probably from more than one person. I guess HELP would have to be capitalized......
I'm going to try and put in a set of 4.10 gears, and have the bearing kit, and rear end cover in hand. Now all I need is the Skill, Ability, and Talent to pull this off.

Brave man!!

Lances03SVT 06-27-2006 07:38 PM

I can do alot of my own work but won't even mess with gears.

zigzaggthefag321 06-27-2006 07:39 PM

I am a tech by trade and I didnt even do it myself....too much crap to mess up and too much time to do it....it is my DD though. Good luck!

MOTT 06-27-2006 07:39 PM

So what you're saying is, get it done someplace else?

Lances03SVT 06-27-2006 07:41 PM

Yes for something like that and not ever doing them before I would have someone at least there to help that has done them before.

Another question. I have both 3.73 and 4.10's sitten here, which in everyones opinion should I put in?

4:10's!!!!

zigzaggthefag321 06-27-2006 08:02 PM

oh jeez...here we go...i got 3.73's and love them...i have driven one with
4.10's and I couldnt see myself living with them day in and day out....they were a lot of fun though. Yeah, get a good Mustang perf. shop, or a dealer to install them.

Sorry for the dumb ass questions.

MattJ 06-27-2006 08:58 PM

If you dont know what you are doing, gears are one you dont want to take a chance and try to get right.

Pay someone to do it who knows what they are doing. There are specs that have to be met correctly when installing gears and you can run into some big problems if its not done right.

object13 06-28-2006 03:10 PM

or in my case, when i get a new rear end, i'm taking it out to Polocks(or however its spelled) its my buddies grandpa, and he has rebuilt a rearend in the dark...literally, this guys been doin it for like 40 some years...so if you wanna learn how, you could probably find someone like him.

r3dn3ck 06-28-2006 04:46 PM

There's a lot of science and even more art to properly setting up gears. I'd go with the 3.73's so you don't spend so much time rowing the gears. 4.10's are wildly fun but just not enough fun to justify (to me) the super short first gear. Cobra's are a different matter to me since they have a much higher redline which stretches 1st back to a reasonable level of utility. Many will disagree, many won't.

In any case, have them done professionally and have the pro teach you how to do it if he's willing. If he's not, a 6er of his preferred suds will usually convince him.

MOTT 06-28-2006 06:01 PM

Can anyone expand on r3dn3ck's response? I haven't put either one in yet, and he has raised another question I must ask myself, now I'm hearing voices....

BlwnSonicBlueGT 06-28-2006 09:42 PM

I would definitly have the gears done professionally... I have 3:73's in my GT and love them.

stevestang81 06-29-2006 04:28 PM

i just got 3.73s and feel no difference thus far...dont know what the problem is but could they have been installed incorrectly without me knowing it?

if my 3.73s were correctly installed then i would go with 4.10s cause right now im pretty pissed...

I must try and remember that in the future I will be adding a S/C. How does that figure into the equation?

What kind of blower you plan on going with? If Vortech, I would say 3:73's, or if Kenne Bell.. I would say 3:55's or at most 3:73's.

It will be the Procharger P-1SC with 3 core intercooler @ 8-10psi boost. Now I'm leaning towards the 3.73 gears. Any one want to change my mind, or help me make it up?
