Headers? Anyone?

I have heard that you have to either pull the block or drop the crossmember (same thing AI guess realy) to put on a set of headers. True or false? I would love to have them but not if I have to do all that crap. Thanks guys!

Headers suck! ST's (short tubes) are a lot easier to install and cheaper to buy, but the gains are not that much. LT's are where the gain are. A nice set of LT's professionally installed is a $1200 job.

Mine are going on when I do a head/cam swap. That way I can have it tuned all at the same time.

there is another thread in 4.6 tech about this. but so you know its not that bad of a job. you dont have ot drop the k-member or pull the negine you can simply remove the engine mount bolts and use a jack to raise it up to get the clearnece you need to slip them in. in realality its not ot bad. with 2 guys you can do it in one days worth of work.

Its crazy how much headers cost nowadays for Modular mustangs or Newer Chevys. I had a firebird and paid $700 for long tube SLP, and installed myself.

What happened to companies like Blackjack and others. $100 bucks for long tube headers for fox bodies 5.0s. I didnt even mind paying $250 for Hookers. Its just crazy how much long tubes and even short tubes cost for modulars. Same amount of Pipe?? Why such a high price??

you dont have to drop it, but it makes easier on install if you do. go with LT better gains.

You get what you pay for. I belive the cost of headers today are so high do to how the are designed. They use to just make a custom set of headers and then build jigs to duplicate the original. Now they like to use lasers and cad to find how much space they have and they use automated proscesses to cut the flanges. and also most headers to day come with ceramic coatings witch are expensive. I have a 90 5.0 and yes i can get cheep long tubes but I want to get Bassani 1 3/4'' that step to 1 7/8" and the cheapes versions ive seen are 500 bucks with out ceramic coatings or about 800-1000 with but they are stainless steel

So I might just be better off (or not worth all the header hassle anyway) with just the flowmaster american thunder that I have and get a catted X pipe then? Should see a small gain anyway, right?

Thanks

I just did a K member a couple weeks ago, and really the LT's would still be a PITA. Obviously much easier with the K out of the way but still a bi%ch. I am doing comp cams/springs and Hooker LT's in Deans (Blue02GT) car in a couple weeks. We are going to just pull the motor...much easier than trying to jack around with it in the car. It may sound extreme, but believe me when I tell you, I can have the motor out and back in before you can do the valvesprings with the motor in the car. $1200 huh? Damn how much more can I charge him for cams/springs....:) Deans car should be able to run 12.50's all day when we're done....not bad for a N/A automatic DD.
