IMRC Clean

So today me and popps went under the hood or te cobra and cleaned out those nasty IMRCs. First off I'd like to say... if u have a 96-98 cobra DO THIS... besides my gears i havent had a mod where i felt a bigger difference than doing this. And best of all.. ITS FREE!

I wish i coulda taken pictures but of course i cant find the camera when i need it. Now i kno most of u guys here have 99+ GTs, but im sure there are a few of u tht can benefit from this. It took about 4 hours of wrench time.. and another hour and a half of scrubbing plus 5 cans or carb cleaner.

Heres a very helpful website for those of you who are thinking of doin this job > http://www.svtmustangcobraclub.com/m...C_Cleaning.pdf

Overall car felt soooo much smoother.. and no more hesitations in the 5K- 6K rpm range. Also learned a lot and had a pretty fun time hangin outside with the old man. This job was not that hard at all (A little time consuming but not hard). If u have all the tools (mostly just a ratchet and 8 - 15mm sockets) and you take ur time and label all the bolts you take off, its pretty simple. I actually found this easier then taking off my rusted stock mid pipe. And i didnt have to be laying on my back the whole time to do it. :punk:

Also have a question for anyone who can help:
When putting back on my intake manifold my Haynes book said to torque the bolts back on at 75-106 pounds?... Now the absolute most i could torque them without it feeling like i was gunna strip the aluminum was 25 pounds, and i didnt get any leaks or anything. Is this a misprint or maybe im reading the wrong thing? :helpsmili

Read it again to be sure, it might have been "inch-lbs".

The rule with that intake is hand tight, and then a little more. Make sure you checked your composite gaskets for tears or anything like that. Tears are bad in that intake.

It is a worthwhile mod. I've done it on my snake already. Its just a PITA to take that intake on and off.

ok?

i'm not sure exactly what the IMRC does exactly... I dont see why It cant be done on a 5 liter either?

someone please explain?

IMRC's are on the 96-98 Cobras and I believe the 02-04 V6's.

Their basic function is to improve the down low torque by closing the secondary intake ports until you hit 3250 RPM. Once you hit 3250, the butterfly valves that cover the ports open up and rush air into the engine, giving the car its mid-high range power. It was Ford's answer to the problem with the B-heads in these cars.

Its mainly a 4.6L thing :).
