K&N Air filter

Whats this that I hear about K&N air filters aren't all that great now? Something about the oil they use? Has anyone else heard about this?

Haven't heard anything about it. I've used them since 98 on every car I have had and have never had a problem...However, I do know that if you don't let the oil dry good or put too much on it turns into a foam turns to a nice goooo when forced into the engine!

They actually let dirt get past the filter when not oiled and cleaned correctly, which is 95% of the time. Your MAF will get dirt and oil on it and cause your engine to ping at full throttle, or close to. Its a pain in the ass to find the problem if youve got pinging.

Yep, its mostly user error. I havent oiled mine and Ive had it for almost 25k miles. Thats where most people screw up, they oil the damn thing all the time, it DOESNT NEED IT for QUITE some time.

Had this discussion on other forums long time ago. K&N has several user issues that you need to be aware of to avoid.

1. Don't reoil it for at least 30K miles in common daily driver duty. Don't need to. It'll still flow.

2. Don't reoil it if you can't be sparing with the oil.

3. Oil can coat the MAF sensor and keep it from reading correctly.

4. K&N gauze filters work best as a filter when they are dirty. The more dirty they get the better they work as a filter. A very dirty K&N is still better than any paper filter.

That's about it.
