Overheating
 

Well we got the cobra all done and now it starts to overheat after fifteen minutes or more of highway driving, we checked the thermostat and everything and cannot figure it out. Any tips or things we could check on the car that may cause this? Imminent replies would be helpful thanks in advance

flush the coolant out and put new in?

No the cobras already hella fast and plus that would only put us way over budget!

1. Replace Thermostat.
2.Flush and Fill system
3. Replace Water pump
4.Make sure the car is running well
5. Buy an 03/04 Cobra radiator
6.Add Fuel to your tune
7. Replace the thermostat with a cooler one
8. Well ur just Sh!t outta luck

Is your fan turning on when it reaches midpoint on temp gauge? if not turn on AC fan should turn on right away if not could be relay, fan,sensor or wiring. When it reaches operating temp feel the upper radiator hose is it hot if so then thermostat is open and working. Do you have the air deflector under the bumper? Its a long plastic piece that directs air to radiator. Have you look at your condensor and radiator fins make sure they are not bent or blocked. These are a couple of simple things to look at. Have you done anything lately to your stang mods?

Well all the parts on the car are new, radiator, condensor etc but not the wiring what is weird is that the fan comes on but we can't get the heater to work and it overheats on the highway only, when we pull over to the side and leave it running it goes just fine and cools down in like five minutes

We got the radiator new and i believe, correct me if im wrong, cobra and gt radiators are the same?

I'd be surprised if the 03/04 Cobra radiator is the same as the GT's.

No matter which radiator you got, if it was new, it shouldnt be the problem.

Just take it to the dealer......

When you go to the dealer heres the deal: you go in give your keys at 7:30 in the morning. they tell you itll be done at 10:00 or 11:00 but count on 3 or 4:00 before you get it back. You go back in and pay a hefty amount of money. Get in your car and its good as new. Sounds like the best thing to do.

what he means is to put in a 180* or 160* thermostat.

somethings wrong. take it to a mechanic. i drove a car where the thermostat stuck open and the car would overheat at stop lights and get cold when i drove at highway speeds. but thats backwards to what your problem is. sorry couldnt help.

Dads taking it to the dealership today while im at school to check the compression cuz it may be a head gasket issue (i hope not) and see what they say about it, first hes gonna try again with the flushing out and refilling with new coolant, hopefully someone can find out what the issue is!

Welll dads been working with it all day and its still "overheating" according to the gauge, we tried to check the temperature with a temperature thingy and it read 235 on the crossover pipe, and 33X on the manifold and 218 in the valley of the engine, under the intake in this internal area

Any idea what temperature it should be?

96-98 Cobras were notorious for overheating, I don't know about 01's but try burping the system...

put gatorade in the radiator...

some guy put a VTEC in his mustang and said gatoraid is the BESTEST coolant out there... WHOO HOO extra HP too!

maybe there is soemthing simple that you are overlooking... a hose going to the wrong place or clogged, bad senor or wire or something along these lines... I have a feeling its something very dumb and simple you are just missing it... I hate it when that happens... lol...

When you filled the Coolant system with Fluid again did you fill through the radiator overflow tank (located at the front of the engine) or via the coolant crossover tube on the motor? You have to fill and burp the coolant system from that point (highest point of the cooling system on the motor). Get a 1/4" or 3/8" (can't remember which) drive socket and remove the Plug located on the driver's side of the top of the coolant crossover tube. Fill and burp the system from here.

This should solve your problem if you did not perform this. 99% of the overheating problems in Cobras were due to not being filled correctly.

Also if youre coolant temperatures reached 235* then you're heads are warped. Look for carbon tracking along the head gaskets and for discoloration of the coolant. Just a thought.

Alot of heads have gone south due to the simple procedure used to fill/burp the coolant systems. Air pockets trapped in the coolant system drastically increased. When coolant temperatures reach ~225 cylinder head temperatures approach 245-250* and the heads will most certainly warp. Gotta love aluminum Heads.

We havedone all this and did a compression check on the haeds,all were at 180 psi, it burped on the highway and needs a gallon of water after every thirty minute drive, trying to get a diagnostic check today at the dealer
