Buy the warrenty or not?
I'm buying a 2000 V-6 with 30k miles on it. The factory warranty has expired, but since i'm buying it from a ford dealership, they are able to give me a Ford factory extended service warranty on it. My bank won't cover this in the loan however. So I told the guy I just wanted the car and that's it. NYS has a lemon law requiring that all cars come with some kind of warranty. So it does have a 90 day/4,000 miles trany and engine warranty on it. Now he says that he can finance the extended service warranty which is 3yr/38,000 miles. So I'll have to pay ford $150 a month as well as my car payment and my car ins payment. I'm a Fulltime student, so to me thats alot considering I'm getting no help from my parents for anything. The only thing I don't pay is rent. I also drive about 25,000 to 30,000 miles a yr. So the warranty will only last me 1.5 yrs. And my grandfather told me that if anything does break he'll help me pay for it. He owns a ford and feels confident that I don't need the warranty and I should just save my money. I have untill 10:30am tomorrow to decide what i'm going to do. That's when I give Ford the check and pick up my car. Does anyone have any advice? I was leaning more towards not getting the warranty, I don't need the extra bill... and the car is in mint condition with only 30k miles. My grandpa's ford is about 10 yrs old now with over 250,000 miles on it and he didn't have any major problems till he hit about 210,000. thanks in advance for any input.

I say to forget the extended warranty.These cars are pretty reliable and I personally don't think you will ever use it.

I would say it depends on what your plans for the stang are and how long you plan to keep it. If you want to mod the hell out of it then don't bother with the warranty. if you want the comfort of knowing that if pretty much anything goes wrong and it's covered then get it. I haven't had too many problems with any of the 4 stangs I've had, but the warranty does give me a little piece of mind. I'm going to have to make the same decision here in the next couple of months so I'm also curious of what people have to say.

the only problems i have ever had with any car were not covered under warranty. thats just how things go. i say forget the warranty and like chopper said just post your problem on here and somebody can help you out. i had an extended warranty on mine that i got for free, i cancelled it and got the money back.

So, I ended up not getting the warranty. Besides I can use that $150 a month to put all sorts of cool things on my car. From cold air intake to new a/c knobs and such....Anyway, I've been driving around all day... just getting used to the feel of the car... and I LOVE it!

Wow.. The BANK said NO WARRANTY???? thts a little insane, after all, if you cant pay and they repo it, they get a non warrantied car. You'd think they would be all about the warranty.

well they won't be repoing it... no one is taking my car from me! I'm actually very good about getting all my bills out on time... if there's one thing I've managed to get straight in my life it's getting my bills paid. Anyway, yeah they said they don't cover warranties... and I couldn't go anywhere else b/c my credit although good, is still somewhat non-existant. My credit history just started to build not to long ago, so I needed a co-signer to get the 5% apr, and the old man won't give out any of his info to anyone so I had to get a loan from his bank.

How banks finance things is very complicated. I am sure due to his young age and new credit history, the car may have had a low loan value with no room to finance the warranty. Besides, banks could care less about them. If they repo the car, they sell back the warranties.
I have had cars with them and without them. If I buy used, I generally buy the warranty until I am comfortable with the car, then I sell it back. You will get most of your money back depending on hoe long you had it. |

Dont even worry about the warranty. If you drive that much its not going to make any difference, plus if you are thinking of doing any major modifications (drivetrain wise) to the car, its just not going to be worth it as you will void the warranty.
Besides, you're only in NJ, and a lot of us are on the East Coast. MT is just outside Philly, so you have a lot of helping hands if anything goes wrong. You even have a Ford Parts guy at your disposal who can beat any dealers replacement part price :). |
