i just cant drive

i went to the track today. something is horribly wrong. i went from 13.5s @ 106 and bald goodyear eagle f-1 to 14.5 @ 94.18 WITH SLICKS. how do you drop half a second off. i got better 60 ft times with street tires. with the slicks i would rev to 3500 and dump the clutch and get 2.00. i tried to feather the clutch and get worse times. and with the street tires i got 1.90, i wouldnt rev at all then dump and punch the gas. the track conditions were really ****y. 98% humidity, 130 deg track, 95 degrees, sun all day. i know track conditions can affect your time, but common a full second, then on top of that i had slicks and power shifting. i tried shifting at different rpms and launching at different rpms. i shifted at 5600 and launched at idle and the best i could muster was a 14.5. help me i was getting beat by stock mustangs.

Were you spinning or bogging? What pressure did you run the slicks at?

Stangeralf 09-20-2005 06:29 PM

Wow sounds strange maybe slicks tire pressure has to do with it.

xlr8r 09-22-2005 05:05 AM

i started out at 15 lbs, spun all threw first. sliped and slid the whole track. lowered it to 10 lbs, sliped threw all 4 gears. went down to 8 psi, launched at 4000 rpms, sliped, hooked, bogged. then i tried 3500 rpms feathered the clutch hooked reved great and got my best 60 ft with the slicks. but the spun on the 1-2 shift then chirped every gear after that. maybe they are just crappy slicks. i dont know what the problem was. can the humidity cause that much of a change in times. the track temp was right around 130 degs. the only thing i cant understand is i was doing everything like my last time at the track ( 13.50 on bald goodyear eagle f-1s ) why is it so different? a stock 98 cobra was running 13.50 @ 103 all day long, he made me look stupid out there.

cobra4123 09-22-2005 05:19 AM

i've decided i can't drive yet either... i can't get better than a 2.16 and avg 2.25 60's on street tires

madmatt 09-22-2005 05:54 AM

What about the burnout? Did you heat em up enough?

When I was at the track Tues., a guy in my car club with his 05 Roush converted Gt had similar comments when he couldnt muster any better than a 14.9.

Blue02GT 09-22-2005 04:27 PM

I run my slicks at 11 psi and heat them up pretty good, they don't even try to spin just grab and go. What brand slicks, size etc. What about the track conditions?

m0nkeh 10-09-2005 04:58 PM

after reading all this, i relize im a dumbazz and dont understand much of it, lol, of course i dont drag race, i got a stock v6 AUTOMATIC stang...but anyway I can learn the talk and etc...lol...this is my first car, and plan on getting GT in a year or 2, then modding that...maybe theres a dragfordummies book or sumtin?

I'm having similar problems with Nitto DR's not hooking.

csledd 10-11-2005 05:07 PM

I dunno about you guys but with my NT-555R's I've never really been able to hook. With similar track conditions (hot as balls and humid) I can't launch any higher than 3k or the car spins and tries to get sideways a little. I got the best 60fts by bogging the engine a little by launching at 3k while dumping the clutch.

I ran the last test & tune of the season tonite. I cut a 1.782, 1.831 & 1.87 on my Nitto's. I just sat there in second gear and smoked the living hell out of them for a good 10 seconds. That's 10 seconds after they began to smoke.

Best run of the night 1.782, 8.209 @81.96, 12.874 @ 107.20
Not bad for a 250 rwhp slushbox.

csledd 10-11-2005 09:31 PM

you always run good times! i hate you! lol im gonna try to do some test and tuning on friday now that is very cool outside

Islander03GT 10-11-2005 10:53 PM

Blue I gotta get my car running like yours....

can you break down your burnout procedure for me? I'd like to try and duplicate it next time I'm at the track... if I can get the nitto's to hook like you do I'd see an improvement for sure.

Blue02GT 10-12-2005 06:35 AM

I pull into the water until my rear tires are right in the center of the water. When they give the signal to stage I pull just out of the water, with the car in second (I have an auto) I smash it to the floor and hold it. I have my side mirrors adjusted so I can see the rear wheel wells. Once they start to smoke it will begin to bog and the rpm's will drop when they get below 3,000 I let off and smash down again to flash the converter. The rev's will go right back up, I then hold it while it smokes for 5-10 seconds. You have to really get Nitto's hot for them to hook. If you don't get good white smoke off of them they won't work. I run my tire pressure at 18-19 lbs and that seems to work best.

Islander03GT 10-12-2005 09:12 AM

Thanks I'll have to try it. A burnout in D isn't working for me.
