HID Ballast

Hey Nick, so tonight as I was driving I noticed my driver side headlight wasn't working. Popped the hood checked everything out and the same thing seems to be happening that happened about 2 years ago. The ballast doesn't make that slight buzzing sound like the passenger side does so I'm figuring the ballast box died (that's what happened to the passenger side headlight a couple years ago). Last time this happened AM sent me a replacement ballast box and after receiving it I shipped the defective one back with an RMA#. I'm going to try messing around with it in the morning when it's lighter out but I was just wondering what can be done if this seems to be the case. Don't remember what the warranty was I believe they told me the last time. If it did die I'm pretty disappointed because that means that neither ballast box lasted 3 years which isn't right for the money they cost.

just took the headlight off and tried reconnecting the wires and no luck so i think its dead :(

AMNick 11-24-2008 10:30 AM

Hmm, have you tried switching the bulbs or ballasts around? I think if a bulb goes out the ballast doesn't buzz.

Dave04Mustang 11-24-2008 10:32 AM

I'll go out and give it a shot now. Just remembered the last time it happened it was the ballast

AMNick 11-24-2008 10:37 AM

Yeah it doesn't hurt to check. It would be very rare to get two bad ballasts. Let me know what you find out. - Nick

Yep you were correct Nick it is the bulb. I was on the phone with AM just now but they thought you may still be in a meeting so he asked what the issue was. Told him the bulb went bad and he said I just have to buy a new bulb so that makes sense but where can I buy one and what exactly would i need? I know its a 9007 bulb and the temperature of the kit was 8K. I got this a while ago it was back when you only had the single beam kits which you don't sell anymore.

Could I get this at advanced auto parts or autozone one of those places?

Holy crap just looked online and another site had the replacement parts... my bulb looks just like this: http://www.stangmods.com/HID-Bulb-p/00801.htm $85?? I'm guessing my bulb isn't in warranty with you guys :(

PColav6 11-24-2008 11:04 AM

Hmm, is there a warranty with the company that makes them? HIDs are supposed to last a LONG time..bulb should not be going bad in a couple of years.

Dave04Mustang 11-24-2008 11:06 AM

the ones AM use to sell had writing from japan or china something like that :( Hopefully Nick has the connections haha. Yeah thought the bulbs were suppose to last like 10x longer or something than stock ones =/. Might be out of luck though since AM doesn't sell them anymore

Precisely the reason bought a cheap Chinese kit. 100 shipped for both ballasts, both bulbs, and they are bi-xenon. 8000k
From the same people I got my kit from, you could get the single beam bulbs and balasts for 70 shipped
They also sold just bulbs and just ballasts for even less. Hope you get this sorted out.

Hmm we only sold those kits for a short while before switching to our new manufacturer with the dual-beam kits about two years ago. I talked to our Purchasing Manager and he is looking into picking up replacement bulbs, but our current dual beam kits use a completely different bulb and digital ballast system. From what I have been told, if you have the old kit, we are unable to get the bulbs or parts for it anymore.

I looked at that link to StangMods...it actually says $85 for a pair of bulbs, not one bulb. Which does sound about right for HID bulbs. The original kits we sold were from StangMods, so that is probably the correct replacement bulb for your system.

As far as warranty goes, our current kits we do warranty the full kit, including the bulbs, for 1 year. HID bulbs will burn several times over the amount of hours of an incandescent bulb in similar conditions, but just like any bulb, their life span will vary due to environmental conditions and duty cycles. I know the kits we currently sell are very high quality. I can't really speak for the StangMod kits since we only sold them for a short period of time, I don't really have any feedback on them.

I guess you really have two options, one you could get the replacement bulbs from StangMods. Or two, the only option I can really offer you since we haven't had these kits in 2 years and can't get parts, I can offer to hook you up with a really good discount on one of our new kits. Shoot me a PM if you want to do the latter, and I will see what I can work out.

-Nick
