Running Poor

Brothas, I need help!!! I have a 94 GT and I recently change my spark plugs, distributor cap and wires and took the car on a spin and it ran great. A couple of days later, I get in it to go and she's lacking serious power when I accelerate. The power is not there. I checked the wires and plugs (gapped at .54) and I ran fuel treatment, she's still lacking serious power.

Can anyone tell me what the problem could be. I'm in active duty military stationed in Germany so mechanics aren't plenty. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I've had wierd things happen with my 5.0 cars in past. Twice I've had problems with computer where I was losing power because of timing problems. Second time I found that my timing was not advancing at all from 10 degrees. Just one idea is to throw a timing light on and see if theres anything strange going on.

Does it make any funny sounds while accelerating or decel? For the hell of it I would also try unplugging different sensors to see if it changes anything life the MAF. Check for unplugged hoses. Some kind of scan tool would probably help tell a story.

I spoke with a guy today who is very knowledgeable of Mustangs and after he took a look and I answered a few of his question, he said that its a 90% chance that its my fuel pressure regulator. Because I'm also experiencing poor gas milage and after putting his finger in the tail pipe he said it was running rich. So I plan to replace that part and I'll let you know.

He also said that I could check the timing but more possibly the fuel pressure regulator. I figure its inexpensive to replace and being that its a 94, it may be bad.

You replaced the cap too right? Don't forget about the ignition module too.

I didn't replace the ignition module...you think that should be replaced also? I'm still waiting on the fuel pressure regulator to come in the mail. I believe thats the major cause of it because my fuel mileage sucks!

I don't know how parts stores are over there and for american cars, but you can take it off and get the ignition module tested before you ever replace it. But that is in the states at most parts stores. I have no idea how that is gonna happen over there.

Oh ment to ask, does the exhaust smell a lot like gasoline like its running rich? Do you get some black smoke when you are at WOT and driving the car?

We have a auto craft shop on base but I'll have to check with them to see if they and do that type of check on the ignition module.

I don't know about the black smoke but the exhaust does smell like gasoline.

Does it puff any amount of smoke at idle? considering it smells like gas I am gonna go with either the regulator like you said or some sort of ignition problem. Could be something as simple as a vacuum leak on the rubber line going to the regulator. Though I think that would cause a lean condition not rich.

contrail1 05-18-2009 11:02 AM

No smoke at idle. I did purchase vacuum tubes to replace a broken tube I have going to a charcoal filter. I'm guessing thats causing another issue I'm having with the AC blowing out of the defrost vent.

spike_africa 05-18-2009 08:21 PM

Yep that would be a broken vacuum hose.
