ok this is weird ignition prob

i went to start the stang today and the car wont start. when i turn the key to the ACC position i dont here my fuel pump turn on like normal, but if i turn the key a little more i here it turn on, then when i let go it turns off. same when i start the car it will start up easy but if the key is not held foward then it cuts off. i thought it was my cylinder so i replaced it but it still happening.. any ideaS????

not sure but this may help! not knowing what year you have your pump is wired so that when you turn the key to the acc position the fuel system gets primed to around 35-40 psi. when you start the car the pump get a different signal to stay on, where this signal comes from depends on your year, i would guess its a relay or wiring problem in the fuel pump circuit, could be the computer but i dout it they usually dont fail unless ubused. you can check by putting a volt meter at the pump and keep turning on the key while you move backwards in the circuit with the volt meter til you see voltage. "BUT BEFORE YOU START CHECK YOUR WIRING DIAGRAM" if you do this incorrectly then you will let the factory smoke out of the PCM (burn it up) i highly recommend taking it to a good shop for repair. i may be right, i may be wrong, but its the first thing that came to me, hope this helps good luck!

here is something very simple that you should check...

check the ground... if it ain't got a great connection this can occur...

lol.. my pal had the SAME problem... bought a a pump... pump rolls in and BINGO... bad connection...

so check that out... its something simple and minor that is so often over looked

ok guys looked at it again today turns out there is a harness that plugs underneath my cylinder and when you turn the key it slides this metal thing along the wires turning the car on and off, and mine is broken, the clips seem to not hold it up any more so i zip tied it in place and trying find a replacement any ideaS on what its called?

cobra331 10-16-2006 06:08 PM

try motorcraft.com or even better a dealer

ramz28 10-18-2006 01:01 PM

dealer said they dont have parts and dont know what im talkin about, and its hard to search for a part when you have no idea what it is. i will try to get a picture of this and post it maybe someone will know

thats the ignition switch, what year is your car?

ramz28 11-01-2006 12:29 PM

its an 86 hatch

Randy Stinchcomb 11-01-2006 12:31 PM

ok then the prob could be the ign swtch, very common problem on most Fords of that era. Ford had a recall on those switches @4 years ago, it could/would catch fire from it. we also have them in stock for @$12.00 + shipping
