popping
 

i have an 88gt with a slight popping problem if i am just driving normal in any gear and just floor it my car pops and then starts to pull at first i thought that it was a needed tune up but even after the tune up it is still doing it


it has speed density and i have a gt40 intake , a upr cold air intake , pulleys , x pipe , and flomaster cat back

What the timing set at and how many miles are on the timing chain?

could be a weak fuel pump because of the fact it does it at WOT only would lead me that way. You can barrow a guage from autozone ot check the fuel pressure on your motor.

If the pressure if at 42 psi and you floor it, i though it stayed at 42 psi?

hmm.. when my car was missing it would make a popping noise and was a lot slower than it should be when I tried to go WOT

When i bought my NGK's they're suppose to be pregapped and it says not to gap them or you could damage them. well i installed them and for some reason when i would get on it, and it hit 3K-4K rpms wit was missing real bad. i checked the gap and it was almost .60, so i carefully regapped them to .45 and it ran like a champ.

I was wanting to know about the timing chain cause after so many miles, at WOT it can stretch and throw your timing off pretty good and make it run like that.

oh, and when my valves on #2 and #7 were burnt, coolant sensor popped out and all the coolant came out, i know it was running bad, popping, no power at all.

Check your plugs, I would think that popping at WOT would be from loading up the plugs (either a sudden rich condition) or a weak spark (from timing or physical plug problem). Too many mods on a speed density could cause problems but your list doesn't look too crazy yet.

The fuel pressure regulator is vacuum sensitive. If the pressure was adjusted to 42 with the vacuum line detached (like you're supposed to), then at full throttle it would be at 42. If it was set to 42 with the vacuum line attached and running, then at full throttle it would jump to something higher... I think this is right? It's been awhile since I've got to play on a 5.0

when you give it gas the psi goes up in EFI to feed the injectors more fuel (for the newbies to cars :)). if it stays the same there is a fuel or regulator problem.

does exhaust leak, make a car pop? what else can a exhaust leak make your car do?

fuel problem. Either your plugs/wires are bad or you just have clogged injector/fuel filter/pump.

it still has a stock timing chain with 76,000 miles on it i replaced the fuel pump and i just put a brand new set of ford racing plug wires i just have not had time to replace the plugs i also just put a cap , rotor , throttle position sensor , fuel filter

did you check the fuel PSI with a guage yet? this would help rule out alot of things.

I would check the timing chain also to see if it's stretched.

I'm sure you got the firing order right.. but admittedly, I have screwed it up before by not paying close attention.

+1 on that one. i remember mine running weak but no popping. but after that i marked them.

This probably won't help but, I had the same problem with my 88 GMC truck when I gassed it. Turned out to be my starter cable was loose and arching. Just in case you may want to check that connection. It was arcing and I would lose power and popping and, it really sounded crazy. new cable and tighten up, ran good as new. FYI.. :shock2:
