Recently I bought a 94 Mustang GT, on the drive home I noticed it was overheating a little, it was running on the L for normal. After it cooled down I removed the thermostat and replaced with a 195 degree. Upon looking at the old thermostat I noticed that the spring was broke. So I fixed the problem. On Sunday it ran fine and Monday morning it ran fine, but Monday afternoon on my way home the temp was creeping to the L again. Course it is 105 degrees outside and the air conditioner was running. When I shut off the air conditioner the temp dropped. After I got home I let er cool down and checked the level of water in the radiator but it was full. So I started the car and let it idle for about 30 minutes with air conditioner on and it did not overheat it ran in the middle on the idiot gauge. how important is the plastic air dam in the front under the car cause the middle is missing in this car? I am little confused with this problem any help would be appreciated

 

My 95 GT did almost the same, not all the way to the L. First i would get a 180 stat, flush out the old coolant and replace with 60 percent water and 40 percent coolant, then add 2 bottle of royal purple or water wetter coolant additive and see how she goes. If it still overheats, i would look into a better aluminum radiator.
Also check to make sure you fan is kicking on. Start your car let it warm up and turn the AC on, your fan should kick on immediatley, if not, there's a problem also.

 

i would bet thers a problem with the fan for sure because with the ac on the fan should run no matter if the car is hot or cold...so thats the place to look

 

I had the same exact problem on my '94. Believe it or not, I checked the connector that goes into the fan, (looks like a little box). And tapped it with a hammer and it hasn't messed up since.

 

I had the same thing happen on my 97' v6 but long story short i replaced the fan motor and that fixed the problem but i did change the thermostat out but it didnt start running cooler till i replaced the fan motor which completly froze.

 

my fan is retarded i swear...the fan works but it doesnt turn on like it should i have a 96 gt...okay so my fan wasnt working and i couldnt figure it out and i knew my ac compressor was bad and wouldnt turn it on so i replaced the sensors on the coolant crossover on the manifold thinking those were bad.but to no avail that diddnt help anything... so i started asking around and ppl said try unplugging clip that plugs into the top of the sensor by the thermo housing and see if that tricks the fan to come on...well sure enough the fan turned right on and i guess that means i have a bad relay...or so im told thats what the problem probably is is the bad relay....but for now until i can find a way to figure out weather 1 of those 3 relays is baad or not my fan just runs constantly but o well keeps it a lil cooler i guess and im probably gonna replace the damn fan sooner or later lol....

Also they make a fan switch so you can wire it inside the car and turn the fan on whenever you want to. On my 95, i set it up to run all the time, didn't hurt nothing, maybe the fans lifespan might have shorten alittle, but atleast it was on all the time.
Also i know there was a TSP on the 95's maybe 94's about the fan, but it was about them catching on fire. they just put a new relay right where the connector goes into the fan. might want to check on that. They contacted me about it years ago.

 

I am sure that the fan is running while all of this was happening. At least it is running in the driveway. But and this is a big but I did not check the fan to see if it was running when the temp increased. Tonight I looked at the radiator and there is alot of road debrie in the radiator, small rocks and bugs. I wanted to put a 180 stat in the car but the part store did not have any go figure. I am thinking about removing the radiator and cleaning it out good and maybe replacing it. Weekend project woo hoo. Thanks again now I have some definant things to look at.

 

180 degree thermostats are the best for 94-95s

I recomend ya get one... it should help alot...

EDIT... a new radiator will definately help...

I think the point you're missing is that you live in Queen Creek, it's a little unrealistic to expect the car to have the a/c on, get baked by the pavement heat coming up, and only run 50 - 70 degrees higher than the ambient temperature! But,do have your radiator flushed at a shop, a good one shop will pressure flush and do a new thermostat. Do clean all the bugs and junk off the front AND backside. Other than that, tough it out til October when it cools off again!! BTW, if you're that concerned about the engine temp, ditch that factory guage for an Autometer with numbers on it.

 

did u also burp it after the changing the tstat? (getting all the air pockets out)

 

I finally found someone to investigate and not charge an arm and leg. He suggested that we check the antifreeze for exhaust fumes. After his test was performed it proved that the heads were warped. So after the heads were redone and new gaskets it runs like a dream now and maintains the temp on a consistant basis.
