#1 Make sure you use the correct oil!!! mine has a tag on the diff that says what to use. Loosen the bottom bolts of the diff cover and then loosen the top and the oil will spill out the bottom. Let the oil drain out. Clean the inside of the diff cover(not the inside of the diff) just the cover. and clean the mating surfaces between the diff and diff cover. Use a new gasket and RTV and put the cover back on the diff...torque the bolts evenly as to allow the gasket to seat properly. You should have a fill plug on your diff...fill the diff with the correct oil until the oil spills out of the fill hole a little. It should come up to the bottom of the fill hole.

While you are in there look at the condition of the diff gears and look for chipped gear teeth or metal in the old fluid.

don't forget an additive, unless your gear oil already has it

I use Royal purple and recommend it, the Friction Modifier from Ford Racing is what you put in the rear with the normal differential 80W 90 oil
Royal P already has the friction modifier in it.

I do this a much easier way... stick the gear oil pump pickup tube into your diff, pump the oil out. Add a little fresh gear oil, pump that out (just a little flush). Add 4 oz tube of equa-torque or Ford's Friction modifier or whatever brand gives you a hardon, fill with gear oil till it just starts coming out the fill hole.

Then you don't have to deal with opening the inspection cover and RTV mess and all that jazz.

I use Redline Heavy Shockproof or light shockproof depending on the season and what I'm doing. Royal purple is also fabulous. Both don't require FM additive.

As they said just unbolt the cover drain it out, clean the cover off and dont bother with a gasket use RTV and use a thick layer of it put the cover back on. Then pull the fill plug (located on the front dirveside) put a 3/8" socket wrench on it and it comes right off. Then just add fluide till it starts to come out.

I think its 75w-140 for our cars right?

if popping the cover and using RTV, black is the color of choice.

Ah forgot that, thanks redneck.

With the leak he said he has thats what i would go with, screw the ford gasket they suck. RTV all the way.

w00t... the gasket never seals well for long. Black RTV on a clean surface will do quite well. That's my preferred way on the 8.8.
