Choices.....Heads / Turbo or Blower....?

Ok, i'm asking for all expert and non-expert opinions on this....

Current motor...1995 mustang Gt 50..with....MAC cold air intake, GT40 upper and lower intake manifold, NGK iridium plugs, FRPP 9mm wires, 180' Thermo, MAC Underdrive pulley's, FRPP alloy shorty headers, MAC pro chamber, MAC cat-bak...Set to 10' on 87 ron fuel...Dyno'd at 225BHP / 268lbs/ft at the wheels.

This is the choice...
1. TFS heads (ported), New cam (specific to car), C&L 76mm MAF, 24lb inj etc..and maybe NOX...
2. Turbo setup (single)...
3. Blower setup...

I need to make a choice based on performance per dollar, reliability (this is a daily driver) and Legality (not all of the above would be California street legal). I would like at least an extra 100-120 HP from this little set up...which i should get from the heads...but will the forced induction route get me the same reliability with the power??

I await your responses and opinions....

Thanks.

Heads alone won't give you 100 or better HP. I have stage 2 ported patriot heads and they should give like 30-40 hp to the wheels. What kind of miles does your car have? If low, i would say supercharger. Good thing about that is it's like driving a normal mustang, same gas mileage(driving it normal, key word) but... HP on the tap. When you drive it normal, not getting on it, it's using little to no boost. it's when you stomp on it the boost kicks in. In my 03 lightning, i put an autometer boost gauge in it. driving normal, it was just pulling vacuum, when you start to get on it, maybe 3pds of boost, when i would floor on it, 10pds of boost, i had a smaller pulley. you treat it good, it will treat you good.

i say build up the internals and put heads and cams on, then it will be able to handle up to a 250-300 shot of nitrous, But if that is too much for you, go with heads and cams and NO power adder, keep it N/A until you get the internals forged

I love turbos (used to do a little work at a turbo shop) but they are by no means cheap. They are probably the most expensive and involved route, but imo they offer the best performance and driveability. Just like what was stated with the supercharger, the boost on a turbo doesnt come in until you drop the hammer, in fact its more true on a turbo because its not driven by the crank. And once you feel the power of a properly tuned turbo (or 2 :shifty: ) on a v8 youll be amazed at how much it pulls and just keep pulling. And also as far as emissions go turbos usually burn up any unburned fuel so they are pretty good with emissions. But unlike with a supercharger, which some kits can be installed by a good hobbyist, your going to want a professional to install and tune the car for you. You should see what happens to a motor when it encounters detonation at 1.5 bar. :helpsmili

I have a 95 GT also with cold air etc...
After doing much research I came to the conclusion of using a Kenne Bell blower unit, this is a twin screw "real" blower, not like a paxton. It uses one surpentine belt to do it all, and comes with everything you need for 3k. I wish Mustangtuning carried it :(.

I do not see anything that would compare to the price per HP. I have done many mods on mustangs in the past, heads cams intakes, exhaust etc give great HP, but a blower give the daily drivability and reliability that I want and cost much less to acheive the same HP.

The only thing you would have to change back is the underdrive pulleys, the kit even comes with a FMU that controls the voltage to your fuel pump, so you dont have to drop your tank. Go there and read all the FAQ's I did and I am impressed!!!!

I am seling my ZX-11 to get the Kenne Bell unit, I can't wait!

Heads, cam, intake are a very different on there cars then ours. Our heads flow very well for stock where as there sucks. Its not uncommon to get 60+ rwhp from heads and cam on 5.0's

I know, i've had both, a 5.0 and 4.6. But depends on what you get, you can get 60 HP with heads and cams for both.

Wow, i didn't realize you could get that much HP out of heads and cams on N/A.

Saleen S330 05-18-2006 12:26 PM

I know with my motor, they put cams in it and gained 27 HP to the wheels. and with the heads that i have, adds around 30-40 to the wheels. 5.0's some AFR 205 heads and a good cam will see some awesome gains.

sometimes more ;)...

i think afr 205s are way too big for a small 302, i wouldnt go bigger then 185s. even then u have to get the pistons notched.

JACKYL50 05-18-2006 05:58 PM

i would say go with the heads and the cam. sometimes turbos/superchargers= headaches with fmu's nd computers boostcontrol and a whole bunch of hidden factors that have to be compensated for. going with heads and a cam and other bolt ons not to mention a beefier bottom end just have more potential to make reliable power thats consistant.

It's a good job i'm not in a hurry..because this is gopnna cost money and i don't wanna make the wrong mistake. All together...TFS heads (ported and flowed) $1750, porting on my GT40 intake to match heads $150, custom cam, to match heads etc $175, Rockers/lifters/24lb inj/C&L 73mm MAF/bolts/gaskets will be around $1240, fitting of all the above $800......Thats just over $4000!! Is 100hp worth it? Or should i sell the stang for 5K, put the 4 to that and buy something else....?
