Ok ill try to explain this without using 10 pages, here we go.
Think of your engine as a giant air pump, the more air you can get in the more fuel you can add, more fuel + more air = more power. Your valves are what actually opens and closes to let the air/fuel mixture in and out of the combustion chabmer. And the cam shaft (cams) actually tells the valves when to open for how long and the rate at which they open and close. They create the personality of the motor, e.g. factory cam good driveability/idle and vacuum. Or a performance cam which is a little loopey at idle like the video above and has a lot more aggrsive lobes on it that are geared for power over daily driveability. I see in your sig you have an 05 GT. The motor in there is a 4.6L 3valve (2 intake and 1 exhaust per cylinder) single overhead camshaft motor. Meaning you have 1 camshaft located above each head that controls the valves for that head. I guess that is going to be as simple as i can go without confusing you if your not to familiar with them. "More aggressive Lobes" = "Bigger Lobes" = "Valve is open for a longer period of time per each time it opens and/or opens more often" = "More fuel and/or air that can get into the valve" = "More power from the engine"? Also, as I said, the second thing I know about Cams is what DOHC stands for, and as the "D" is for "Dual" I would take that to mean there are two instead of 1. So, are there actually two cam shafts per head then? If so, how does that work, and what's the benefit? If not, what exactly is a Dual Cam doing? Thanks again. |
Yup your right on all that. Its actually a little complicated becaues you can have the same lift but different durations, or the opposite. We dont really have enough room to discuss all of that. But IMO the best people to talk to are these guys http://www.compcams.com/ They definately know what they are talking about when it comes to cams.
And yes DOHC means there are 2 cams per head, this is reserved for 4 valve (per cylinder) heads, 1 cam controls the input valves and 1 controls the exhaust valves on one head. And then theyre are 2 more cams on the other head 1 for intake and 1 for exhaust. |

I don't understand why someone would cam a 3v since it already has variable cam timing. Doesn't that eliminate the need for an aggressive cam?

no not exactly, they have come out with cams for the 05/06 Gt's that are comptible with the VCT, so you get an agressive cam and still be able to use the VCT
