Transmission

Well as you know I have and automac v6 and am wondering if it would be woth the time and effort to switch from an automatic tranny to a manual and if so how much would it cost and where would i get all the parts. Would i have to change the computer or get a tuner or do somthing to the engine or what just another idea to get me through till i get a different car or somthing:beerchug:

Milos 02-09-2006 05:51 PM

well to me i don't think having the automatic is that bad. of course you could make the argument that "you feel more with the car" when its a standard, but the only difference is the horsepower drop ont he wheels, (is it 15% standard and 20% automatic, someone correct me on that?)...

thing with the automatic is, with a tune or not, the auto is ALWAYS going to shift at the right EXACT time, where as if you're not a skilled manual driver you could easily slip up.

manual>*

do it if u have the time and funds...

DarkShadow04 02-09-2006 07:20 PM

Alright ill have to tell faja later hes in georgia or sumthin

TEGO210 02-10-2006 11:47 AM

well some would agree that having an auto is better for drag racing since it is more consistent on the shifts. But i guess it depends on what kind of driving you are going to be doing. But manual trannies are fun to drive.

whitethunder46 02-10-2006 12:03 PM

It's truley your preferance, it will cost at least 3 grand to do the swap with a new manual tranny done by a good shop. If I were you, I'd build your auto, stall convertor, shift kit or j mod, tranny cooler, gears, and you'll have a fassssttt auto

DarkShadow04 02-10-2006 01:44 PM

Would it really cost 3 grand??

whitethunder46 02-10-2006 05:23 PM

For the tranny, the pedals, the kit and all the little pieces you'll need plus at least another 500 for a shop to install I would say yes.

DarkShadow04 02-10-2006 07:45 PM

what if i did it myself over a period of time

whitethunder46 02-10-2006 09:57 PM

then subtract the shop labor, lol, would save you at least 500. I still think you're looking around 2000+

Lances03SVT 02-11-2006 03:52 AM

Had a friend do the swap in an older Camaro one time. Was a huge mess.Always had trouble with something on it and it was'nt cheap.

DarkShadow04 02-11-2006 07:45 AM

yes but the entire thing is for my learning and it will be sitting for a long time when my bro gets his done so i have a year or two to get its all done and collect money

TClark22 02-11-2006 10:18 AM

well all i have to say is...if i had the money i would be doing it!!

but i only have like 1500 left and now job...and 750 of that is going to new tires when i get my wheels for my bday and then 220 for some springs...so yea

but i am trying to get a job so i can do more **** to my car!!...i would definatly change tranny's before i superchraged it...i want a manual that bad

Milos 02-11-2006 03:09 PM

I personally like the auto, less work for me when I'm just crusin' :punk:

You will gain more HP to the wheels since there's less drivetrain loss, but you wil also shed some pounds due to your auto tranny weighs around 50 pds more than a T-5 that you could put in your car. You can always find a real low mileage tranny, and look on ebay for the 5 speed pedal kit and maybe 5 speed V6 computer, buy the clutch cable and quadrant, nice clutch kit, new flywheel, buy the leather shift boot and attach it to your auto shift bezel, short throw shifter, maybe pilot bearing. Just look around ebay, or local junk yard. But if the deal is to good to be true, cheap tranny, it might be crap. Ask questions about it or have a local mechanic check it out. Driving is one thing, controlling you beast is another.....

Just my 2 cents..

will the t5 from the gt cars fit my six?? if so this solves all my problems:beerchug:

Saleen S330 02-11-2006 04:10 PM

I know the 96-2004 V6's will work, they all had the T-5. The 95 and later GT's had T-5's but not sure if they would work.

do you mean that the transmission is different but is called the same thing??

Saleen S330 02-11-2006 04:15 PM

A 95 GT T-5 might be like a 2004 V6 T-5 but after years and the V6's getting more power, i would think FORD made the 2004 V6 T-5 alittle stronger, atleast the internals. But if it was me, i would find a nice low mileage 2003/4 T-5 for now.

Saleen S330 02-11-2006 04:17 PM

Oh and the 96-99 or 2000 GT's received the T-45 and later the 3650, i believe. Not 100% sure if they can fit on your car, unless some mods have to be done to the bellhousing.

from a gt?? I cant seem to find any manuals for the v6 anywhere ecept the 3.8 litres with a million miles on them would an 01 cobra transmission work

dom 02-11-2006 04:49 PM

buy a converter and valv body

Saleen S330 02-11-2006 05:00 PM

Not sure about the 01 Cobra Tranny.

The only auto i have ever own, and wished that i still had it ....my 03 Lightning. Sport cars are made to rip through the gears, not pushing on the pedal, and "oops, it kicked in and i didn't want it to or i wish this thing would kick into gear"
MMR has a 5 speed stang that runs 8.99 @ 154MPH, so you can't say it's a better track thing.

Good luck with the tranny swap, hopefully someone will add some more useful info to help you out.

dom 02-11-2006 05:08 PM

03 lightning transwmissions are like little shcoll girls compared to my 4r70w those who havent riddin in built autos always whine that sticks are cooler

DarkShadow04 02-11-2006 05:10 PM

well how much wouold it cost to build an auto??

Saleen S330 02-11-2006 05:17 PM

a Lightning 4r70W that come from the superduty F250 trucks, to handle torque, not the 2nd gear tire bird chirp that your use to, and with the valve mod i put into it...weak??? HAHA, that's good. Yeah....my girlfriend use to have an auto....GIRL friend

dom 02-11-2006 05:21 PM

weak... she nor you had 4200 stall and a full race valve body with transbrake... your lightning trans was the slushiest weaking feeling trans i have ever heard of, you wil be laughed at for calling a stock trans with upgraded line pressure hardcore. i pity your lack of fast car experience, knowledge, and funds, and your fat girlfriend for making that auto sweat to death..

you had a stock trans with line pressure turned up.. pusssy trans. almost as pusssy as your stickshift. i would completely brutally make a mockery of your car.

anyway, for the v6 all u need is a converter and a valve body

DarkShadow04 02-11-2006 05:24 PM

how much and where

dom 02-11-2006 05:26 PM

you can get a single disk converter and be ok, since your v6NA, if u plan on making decent power get a multidisk from precision ind. for a basic single disk its around 500bucks for the converter, u can jmod your trans for next to free, and get a complete streetstrip valve body from performance auto for around 300 .

DarkShadow04 02-11-2006 05:30 PM

I just want more of the power to the wheels without modding the engine
