on a 1998 v6 mustang automatic what controls the odometer and tripmeter? my speedo worx as well as my tach but the other 2 quit working? hints on what to check and where to look? thnx in advance bb

there is plastic gears that move the odometer. common for them to stop working. anyplace that sells mustang stuff should sell them.

Have to take the instrument cluster out, take off the back and look for a worm and cog gear, both plastic. Usually black in color. replacements can be had off e-bay for$35. I have replaced these on mine and it works fine again.

odometer and tripmeter
ok guys ill look but what drives the gears? is it like a seperate speedometer cable? coming from the tranny? thnx
|
No speedo cable like old school cars. It's all electronic. just one plug at the back runs the whole instrument cluster. Once you get the cluster out, go in from the back side. Plastic is clear(or blueish) so you can see where to go before you get started.

speedo
ok guys thnx for that ill pull it out this wknd thnx again

You need to replace broken gears inside cluster. I would not bother getting another cluster as it will break due to the age of the cars.
