I've never really given gears a break-in. With my first set of gears, they were used also. At first I tried to take it easy, but after probably 100 miles just drove like normal. With the gear I got installed just a couple of months ago, I made the 200 mile interstate drive back to college and figured that was enough of a break-in. I'll probably change the fluid next spring or summer.

You should be good to go as far as being used. New gears need 3 heat cycles to seat properly. Run 10 miles down the road and then set for 30 mins then drive home, repeat one more time. During the 30 min wait you can ask yourself "why didn't I get these sooner?" On the way from the second round, drive it like you stole it.

Make sure you add the friction additive to the gear oil and don't cheap on gear oil.
Enjoy!

ok so i got a estimate of like $500ish from a local ford dealer but the guy who says he specializes in mustangs and does a lot of rear ends is telling me its a bad idea and after a couple burn out the bearing will go to **** on me and ruin my rear end..? ive never heard of this and if i did i would have not gotten the gears lol. is this guy right?

When I had my rear end rebuilt at a 4x4 shop I asked the dude if I would get a warranty since i bought everything from him. He said yeah, Ill give you 12 months. I said alright sounds good. Picked my car up 2 days later and he said it was good to go. He also reminded me to let the gears do a heat cycle or two before I do long (45-60 minute) drives. I said is that all i have to do? He said yeah and I left doing a fatty burn out from his shop

In my defense it was 50ish degrees and a little moist and that 3600 stall converter sure didnt help 400lb ft of torque stay planted to the ground!

Your mechanic doesn't know ****. The only time you'll have problems is if you have around 350hp or launching on sticky drag tires.

+1 to that. You need to find a well known and reputable off road shop and see what they quote you. They do that kind of stuff all of the time. I wouldn't spend over $250 to install them, but that's if you pay for or provide fluids, the gears and/or a bearing kit.

Granted the 8.8 is a better rear end, the 7 1/5 will be fine for you. His problem is he does'nt want to install used gear sets because you have to be right on the money or sometimes they whine. Just do it, you'll love the difference.

In my neck of the woods labor is about 400.00
